The children are perfectly under his control, and their manners are manifestly improving. The master was trained at St. Mark's.

Good Easter, Boys', Girls', and Infants'.-A neat plain room. The discipline not good. Reading has been well taught; the Catechism repeated accurately. The mistress a young girl quite untrained. I consider it a matter of surprise that she has managed so well.

Galleywood Common, Esser, Boys' and Girls'.-A mixed school for young children, in an outlying district. A bandsome room licensed for Divine Service. The children, from two to nine years of age, are well instructed in the usual subjects of Infant schools.

Hoddesdon, Herts, Boys' and Infants'.-A large, handsome, airy, building. The master, an active young man trained at Westminster, has been but a short time in the school. There is reason to hope that next year I shall be able to make a satisfactory report.

Horringer, Suffolk, Boys' and Girls'.-See report of last year. Both schools are in a very satisfactory state. The girls much improved since last year, especially in reading, spelling, and arithmetic.

Hertford, Herts, Cowley-school, Boys'.-A handsome room, with recess. Attendance irregular. Boys behaved well. The instruction limited to the Holy Scriptures, arithmetic, geography, and some grammar. Boys work sums correctly and rapidly, but without clear understanding of principles. In the Scriptures they also require more accurate knowledge and more explanation.

Hertford, Herts, Cowley-school, Girls'.-A neat, convenient room, with recess. Order good. Religious instruction good and practical. Writing on slates neat. Little progress in arithmetic. The mistress has been five years In the school; she is a very respectable, painstaking woman.

Hertingfordbury, Herts, Boys' and Girls'.-There is much life and intelligence in this school; the children are very attentive. The religious instruction is remarkable for extent and accuracy. The school is in a most satisfactory and efficient state. The master and daughter conduct the schools with equal skill and diligence.

Hertford Heath, Herts, Boys' and Girls'.-Double schoolroom with partition. The attendance very irregular. Penmanship good, pains taken with arithmetic; reading hasty and imperfect. Scriptural subjects taught with some success. The master and mistress have been 18 years in the school.

Hatfield, Herts, Boys'.-Schoolroom not very substantial, but tolerably convenient. Order very good. Reading might be improved. Arithmetic wants explanation, but they are tolerably accurate and ready workers, Master not trained; he appears a religious and conscientious man. The boys behaved very well. There are other schools in the parish. Hatfield, Broad Oak, Essex, Boys' and Girls'.-Both schools are in a very unsatisfactory condition, nor is it probable that they will improve under the present teachers.

Havering-atte-Bower, Esser, Boys' and Girls'.-The children behaved well during my visit. The reading is rapid and inaccurate, and little progress has been made, excepting in spelling and penmanship.

Hutton, Essex, Boys' and Girls'.-A good village school in the same condition as last year. The children are well behaved, and evidently attached to their teachers. The instruction is elementary, owing to the children being very young. The religious instruction appears to be practically impressed upon the minds of the children.

Ichleford, Herts, Boys'.-Instruction limited; fair proportion of readers; dae pains bestowed upon the religious instruction, and with success. New schools are about to be built by the Hon. Mr. Ryder, who wishes to establish them upon a complete system. The clergyman was not present at the examination.

Kelvedon Hatch, Essex, Boys'-The attendance irregular and not punctual; little system. The reading very defec tive in the girls' school, rather better in the boys' school. Some of the children show intelligence and knowledge of Scripture.

Messing, Essex, Boys' and Girls'.-The religious instruction is practical and complete.

Pirton, Herts, Boys'.-A large school, conducted by a very young untrained mistress. With the exception of reading, which is fair, and writing on paper, which is tolerable, little progress has been made.

Rickmansworth, Herts, Boys' and Girls-A tolerably good room. The girls young, removed at 11 to a'silk factory; where of the 63 in attendance 16 are employed half their time. The discipline tolerably good. Instruction very imperfect in all subjects; few can read the Testament with ease, and they are imperfectly acquainted with the meaning of words. Spelling very bad, penmanship imperfect, little or no idea of arithmetic. The mistress is a person of most respectable appearance and pleasing manner; she has been four years in the school. She has succeeded better in the lower than upper classes. The boys behaved well, all very young; they are removed early to paper mills or agricul tural works. Few can read the New Testament. Two or three of the elder boys are intelligent, but imperfectly instructed. There appears to be no system.

Roxwell, Essex, Boys'.-Boys quiet and well behaved. Not much intelligence, but fair progress in all the routine of school work.

Roxwell, Essex, Girls'.-The girls neat, cheerful, and well behaved. Little progress in reading, spelling, and writing.

Stevenage, Herts, Boys'.-Two schools separated by a wooden partition. Boys are cheerful and attentive, and show intelligence. Catechism well explained; they have fair knowledge of Holy Scripture. Master a conscientious, painstaking, and well-informed man.

Stevenage, Herts, Girls'.-Girls in tolerable order; some read the New Testament with ease. There are no secular books in use, and the instruction may be much improved.

Stapleford, Herts, Boys' and Girls'.-The boys' and girls' school is deficient in order, and is conducted upon an imperfect system; but the reading is unusually good, and the religious instruction is very satisfactory. The mistress a respectable woman, untrained.

Stapleford, Herts, Infants'.-Infants kept in order, and well taught by an intelligent young woman.

Stapleford, Cambridgeshire, Boys'.-The children are at present taught in the old vicarage, by a respectable but

untrained master. The new schoolroom is well situate, and will be a handsome and convenient building. This is the fourth school which the clergyman has established.

Sawston, Cambridgeshire, Boys' and Girls'.—The children learn very little, and are kept in no order.

Southend, Essex, Boys' and Girls'.-A small school of boys and girls, under a mistress. The room neat, well lighted, and airy. The children instructed with care and some success by an untrained mistress. The reading is good, and the children possess a useful and intelligent knowledge of the Holy Scriptures.

Great Shelford, Cambridgeshire, Boys' and Girls'.-The schools are in the same satisfactory condition as on my former

visits.

Swaffham Prior, Cambridgeshire, Boys' and Girls'.-An ill-built room; order good; the children attached to their master, an industrious and excellent man. The progress in elementary subjects satisfactory. The moral influence of the school has been deeply felt in the parish.

Sacomb, Herts, Boys' and Girls'.-A dame school in a cottage. There is no appearance of system. A few can read the New Testament imperfectly, and are slightly acquainted with its outlines. The Catechism seems to have been explained.

Stowmarket, Suffolk, Boys' and Girls'.-See former reports. These schools are both in a very unsatisfactory condition. The master has resigned since my last visit. The candidates who were proposed for the girls' school were quite unfit for apprenticeship..

Stock, Essex, Boys'.-Little order and no system, the instruction deficient in every respect.
