Langtoft.-Boys and girls mixed, in a poor state of discipline, and making small progress, under a master who was for a short time at York. Much deficiency in arithmetic, and great want of ventilation. When this school opened 18 months since, the children did not know their letters.

Hull, St. Mark's.-Boys.-Boys (with classes subdivided into National and Factory divisions) under a master trained at Westminster; the discipline is imperfect, and the progress moderate; great unpunctuality of attendance. Some of the Factory children are more advanced than the National. A good deal of corporal punishment.

Girls.-Girls in the same room, separated from boys by low curtain, in a fair state of discipline, and making creditable progress under a mistress, trained at York, who seems attentive to her school. Many children leave school daily at 3h. 30m. P.M. to carry tea to their parents.

Michlegate, York.-Boys.-The discipline of this school is good, and the progress fair. The boys are under a master, trained at York, who questions them intelligently and in a pleasing manner. Writing is good. Arithmetic not taught intelligently. Fee only 1d. per week, too low for the class of children in this school.

Husthwaite.-A mixed school in a moderate state of discipline, and making poor progress, under an untrained master, who has taught here for 30 years; there is no time-table nor apparatus. The school is neither opened nor closed with prayer. The floor wants repair.

Leeds, Newtown.-Boys.-The state both of discipline and progress is very good for the time (two months) during which the school has been at work. The master was trained at Battersea; has good skill as a teacher. The building is handsome, and the rooms of a good size, not too large. There is need of a larger supply of books and apparatus. Girls.-The girls are in a pleasing state of order, and making fair progress for the time they have been in school. But little arithmetic at present; the mistress is still under a course of training. Her manner to the children is kind. Infants.-The infants are under a very young mistress; not regularly trained. They are not yet in good order. They have learned a little Scripture History, and the first part of the Catechism.

Gomersal.-A mixed school, under a master trained at York, with his sister as sewing-mistress. The order of the

REMARKS.

school is very fair, and its progress creditable. But little arithmetic yet; there is considerable improvement here since my last visit.

Birkenshaw.-Boys and girls mixed, under an untrained master, with his sister as assistant, and mother as sewingmistress. The children are in a poor state of discipline, and have made but little progress. The children find their own books; much confusion and hinderance arise from this cause.

Cleckheaton.-Boys.-The discipline of this school is good; its progress very fair. The boys are under a master trained at Battersea. Writing remarkably neat. The master questions with some skill. The buildings are much improved since my last visit, and made very commodious.

Girls.-The girls are under a mistress trained at Westminster, in a fair state of discipline, but making moderate progress. Few subjects of instruction given. Considerable difficulty in obtaining funds for the support of these schools. Dewsbury Middle School.-This is a boys' school, with a few girls, under a master trained at Westminster, in a very satisfactory state, both as to discipline and progress. The master well-informed and pleasing in manner. This is intended for an upper school, and seems likely to succeed well.

Infants.-A good infant school, under an intelligent and painstaking master, aided by two of his children. The little ones are in good order; too much crowded in the school, but making satisfactory progress.

Leeds, Little London.-A mixed school, taught much on the simultaneous system, under a master trained at Glasgow, in a tolerable state as to discipline and progress. The room hardly large enough for the number of children. The master instructs them with much animation. Gallery too steep. Great want of apparatus.

Leeds, St. Saviour's.-Boys.-The discipline of this school is very good, and its progress satisfactory; much improved since my last visit. The master teaches skilfully, and is devoted to his work. Good use made of the play-ground for

exercise.

Girls.-The girls are in a very poor state of order and progress, unpunctual in their attendance, and ignorant. The mistress is about to leave; not, I think, qualified for such a school. Some girls sent for who had not been present for a year, to make a show of greater numbers.

Girls.-The girls are generally less advanced than the boys. It seems to me that too many subjects of instruction are attempted. There is great want of funds for the support of this school. The offices stand in need of repair. Dewsbury Moor.-No daily school held in these rooms. The Sunday school is said to be in a flourishing state. The children of this district go to Dewsbury school, about one mile distant.

Dore.-A mixed school, not regularly arranged in classes, under an untrained master, assisted by his daughter. The children are in a poor state of discipline, and very ignorant. The master has been teaching 26 years; was formerly a currier. There is no prayer in the school. Everything done by rote.

Huddersfield, St. Peter's.-Infants.-This school only re-opened after the holidays yesterday. The children not yet in order; many new ones. They seem to be intelligently taught by an attentive mistress. The numbers are not so great as at my last visit. Some new schools have been opened in the place.

Huddersfield, Woodhouse-Boys.-The discipline of this school is fair, and the progress creditable. The master was trained at York: is an intelligent questioner. A few of the upper boys are taught Latin, as a reward. The buildings, master's house, &c. are handsome, and kept in good order.

Girls.-The girls are under an untrained mistress, in a pleasing state of discipline, and making fair progress. The reading of upper classes is remarkably good. There is only small knowledge of the Catechism in this school. No corporal punishment allowed.

New Mill.-Boys and girls mixed; about half of the number are mill children, in a good state of discipline and progress, considering the circumstances of the place. The master is an able man; attempts, I think, too many things in this school. Considerable improvement since my last visit.

Burley, Leeds.-This is a mixed school, which has only been open 14 weeks. The discipline and progress are very satisfactory for the time. The master has some skill in teaching; his wife is sewing mistress. The building is handThe class-room should be more fully ventilated.
