TAKE MY ADVICE: BOOK FOR EVERY HOME: GIVING COMPLETE AND TRUSTWORTHY INFORMATION ON EVERYTHING PERTAINING TO DAILY LIFE: HOUSEHOLD MANAGEMENT; DOMESTIC COOKERY; BREWING, DISTILLING; EVERYBODY, ETC. BY THE LATE EDITOR OF "THE FAMILY FRIEND." LONDON: JAMES BLACKWOOD & CO., PATERNOSTER ROW. 1872. 268. b. 24. PREFACE. NOTWITHSTANDING much that has been written about Household Management and Domestic Economy, these subjects are not yet thoroughly understood by those to whom their intelligent practice is most important. The publication of TAKE MY ADVICE is, therefore, fully warranted. It has been the endeavour of the compiler to make all his explanations and directions clear and explicit. The Cookery Receipts have been actually tested, and every hint bears the recommendation of real experience. In the chapter devoted to the Choice and Furnishing of a House, many important cautions will be discovered; and in the section Law are numerous Bits of Advice that are indispensable to everybody. So also of the other departments of the volume. Garden Management has been written by a Practical Gardener; Ladies' Work has been prepared and supervised by a thoroughly-qualified adept in Ornamental Needlework, &c. ; Games and their Rules have been adapted, by permission, from the works of Captain Crawley; while in Domestic Medicine, Etiquette and Manners, and Funeral Arrangements, the best authorities have been consulted for the most trustworthy information, conveyed in a brief and comprehensive style. The mode in which the several directions are given differs materially from that usually employed in works of this character. Instead of placing the paragraphs in alphabetical order-whereby archery and asthma, balloons and butter, puddings and pills, marriage and medicine are disagreeably united on the same pages—a definite arrangement of subjects has been adopted, and a full and complete Index gives easy and immediate reference to every paragraph. Thus it will be found that, in all that concerns the Practical Business of Life, “ Take my Advice" is really what it professes to be A BOOK FOR EVERY HOME. CONTENTS. CHOICE of a house.
