7. How many figures do you use in writing one hundred? Ans. Three figures: the significant figure 1 and two Os (ciphers or zeros).

8. Write 2 and annex 0 to it; what does it make?

Ans. Twenty.

Write 3; 4; 5; 6, &c., and place 0 to the right of it; what does it read?

9. Write 7 and annex 6, what does it read?

Ans. Seventy-six.

Write 5 and annex 4; 6 and annex 3, &c.; what does each read?

1. Write seventeen; twenty-six; forty-five; sixty-six; eightynine; ninety-four; forty; fifty-two; sixty; seventy-seven eighty, &c.

2. In 19 what does 1 stand for? In 25 what does 2 stand for? In 46 what does 4 stand for? In 79 what does 7 stand for? &c. In 100 what does 1 stand for?

3. Write all the numbers from ten to nineteen; from twenty to thirty-five; from thirty-three to forty-six; from forty-six to sixty; from sixty to seventy-one; from seventy to eighty-five; from eighty-one to 100, &c.

LESSON IV.

INTRODUCTION TO ADDITION.

1. How many fingers have you on each hand? Five. How many on both? Ten.

Well, you can count as high as TEN on your fingers; and then begin again for another ten. Use them at first when you cannot do otherwise, on such questions as the following; but try to do without them as soon as possible.

2. If you buy apples for six cents, and nuts for five, how much have you to pay?

3. You had eight marbles, you win four at play, how many have you?

4. Three boys met a blind beggar, the first gave him three cents, the second four, and the third five; how many cents did the beggar get?

5. John had seven cents, and his father gave him eight more; how many had he then ?

6. Thomas spent twelve cents yesterday, and six today; how much has he spent?

7. I buy a coat for twenty dollars, and a vest for eleven ; what is my bill for both?

8. I walked nine miles in the morning to visit a friend, and returned in the evening; how many miles did I walk in all?

9. Jane lost nine cents, and has sixteen left; how many had she before?

10. Mary bought six yards of ribbon at one store, twelve at another, and seven at a third; how many yards did she buy?

11. I paid twenty cents for a pound of butter, and eight cents for a dozen of eggs; what did my marketing cost me?

12. A man bought eight dozen of eggs from one person, and as many from another; how many dozens did he buy?

13. I gave fifteen dollars for a cow, six for a calf, and three for three turkeys; what did I spend?

14. A grocer sells tea for five dollars, sugar for ten, and coffee for nine; what is the whole amount?

15. A hen has thirteen chickens, another nine; how many in all?

16. A traveller paid six dollars for stage fare, two for tavern bill, five for horse hire; what was his whole expense?

17. A tailor makes, out of a piece of cloth, one coat with four yards, two pairs of pants with three yards each, and a cloak with six; how many yards in the piece?

18. A father has three sons and gives nine cents to each; how much does he give in all?

19. Mary buys six oranges for ten cents, and eight

more for twelve; how many oranges has she bought, and for how much?

20. A farmer has nine cows and six horses, he buys five more cows and four horses; how many cows and how many horses has he now? and how many heads in all?

21. A man bought a table for three dollars, a hat for five, and a coat for six; how much did he spend? how many are three and five and six?

22. A boy has eight marbles, and wins six at play; how many has he in all? how many are six and eight?

23. I visited a friend who lived at a distance of seven miles, and I came back in the evening: how many miles did I go in all?

24. Six glasses were broken in a window, four in another, and eight in a third; how many glasses are wanted to replace them? how many are six, four, and eight?

25. Jane buys five apples, Thomas seven, John six, and pays for all at one cent a piece; how much has he to pay ? how many are five, seven, and six?

26. There are nine steps in the first flight of stairs, five in the second, and eight in the third; how many steps are there in the whole stairs? how many are nine, five, and eight?

LESSON V.

1. How many elementary rules are there in Arithmetic? There are four elementary or simple rules in Arithmetic. 2. What are they?

Addition; Subtraction; Multiplication; and Division.

ADDITION.

3. What is ADDITION?

ADDITION is an operation by which several numbers of things of the same nature (or name) are joined into one, which is called their SUM or TOTAL AMOunt. 4. Repeat the Addition table.

N.B. Such exercises as these must be practised without preparation, until the pupil can answer promptly and correctly.

LESSON VI.

ADDITION OF SMALL NUMBERS.

1. How much should be added to 1, to 2, to 3, to 4, to 5, to 6, to 7, to 8, to 9, to make 10?

2. You pay 12 cents for a slate, and seven for paper; how much have you spent?

3. A teacher had twenty scholars, and receives five more; how many has he now?

4. John's father gave him 25 cents, and his mother 4; how many cents has he?

5. James has 34 eggs in a basket, and has sold 3; how many had he?
