RULE.

Calculate the coft and fale, and the difference between them will give the lofs or gain.

(1) Bought 12 pieces of white cloth for 20 rupees per piece, paid 5 rupees a piece for dying: for how much muft I fell them a piece to gain 20 per cent, and what is the amount cost and fale of the whole?

(6) Having bought a parcel of goods for 1000rs. and fold the fame immediately for 1120rs. with 4 months credit, what is gained per cent per annum? Answer 36 per cent per annum.

(7) Bought 40 gallons of Brandy at 3rs. per gallon; by accident 6 gallons of it were loft, at what rate may I fell the reft with 8 months credit, and gain. upon the whole prime coft at the rate of 10 per cent per annum? Anfwer 3rs. 12a. 2p.3 per gallon.

(8) Bought 100 fkins of raifins at 2 rupees each payable in 9 months; fold them for 2rs. 4a. payable in 15 months; what is the profit per cent per annum at that rate? Answer 25 per cent.

(9) Suppose I have goods to the value of 5796rs.

10a. 6p. that come to a bad market, and know that they impair by lying, I therefore am obliged to fell them at 12 per cent lofs; what come they to? Anfwer 5118. 1 a amount fale.

(10) A man buys cotton for 6rs. a maund, which not proving fo good as was expected, would put it off again, fo as but to lofe 6 per cent by it, what is the felling price? Anfwer 5rs. (11) A man buys 2000 bazar maunds of pepper, with which he went to Madras, it coft him 3f.rs. 4a per bazar maund, the freight and cuftom came to 150f rs. his own expences and charges were 216f.rs. 13a. 4p. for how much must he fell it per Madras maund in Arcot rupees to gain 20 per cent? Anfwer 1 A. r. 5a. 6p. per Madras maund.

(12) If my factor at Madras returns me 300 barrels of anchovies each weighing 14 feers, which ftand me here in 121⁄2 annas per feer, in lieu of 7490 feers of falt-petre, and I find that I have gained after the rate of 17 per cent by the faid confignment: pray how was my faid falt-petre invoiced per feer to the factor, that is, what was the prime coft? Answer I rupee per feer nearly. (13) Having bought 160 gallons of French brandy at

Sa per gallon, there chanced to leak out 18 gallons; at what rate per gallon may I fell the remainder with 8 months credit, fo as to gain upon the whole prime coft at the rate of 12 per cent per annum? Answer 3rs. oa. 8p. per gallon. (14) Having paid 14a.a yard for 100 yards of cloth, I propofe to gain 25 per cent ready money, and if I fell it upon time to have moreover 10 per cent per annum on the ready money price for the forbearance, what must be the price of one yard with 6 months credit to make both these gains? Answer Iг. 1a. 6p. ready money price, and 1r. 2a. 4p.1⁄2 on 6 months credit.

(15) Laid out in a lot of muslin 4Ɛors. 12a. upon ex

amination of which 2 parts in 7 proved damaged, fo that I could make but 5a. 6p a yard of the fame, and by fo doing find I loit 48rs 10a. by it, at what rate per yard am I to part with the undamaged muflin to make up my faid lofs? Anfwer grs. Sa. per yard.

(16) A draper bought 100 yards of long cloth, for which he gave 560 rupees, I defire to know how he must fell it per yard to gain 190 rupees on the whole? Anfwer 7rs. 8a. per yard.

(17) A vintner buys a quantity of brandy at 2rs. 8a. per gallon payable at 6 months, and fells the fame at 3 rupees per gallon payable in 10 months: how much per cent does he gain at that rate per annum? Answer 60 per cent.

(18) A merchant buys 10 cafes of fago weight 40

each bale to reams, which with charges there amounted to 820 rupees, I pay duty here 6 annas per ream, and for freight 40 rupees: what does this paper stand me in per ream, and how muft I fell it per ream to gain 10 per cent?
