INTRODUCTION.

IT has been thought desirable by the Committee of the Church Homiletical Society, under whose auspices this volume is published, that the book should not go forth to the public without a few words explanatory of the origin of the Lectures and of the interesting movement connected therewith; which is briefly this:

A young clergyman having conceived that it would be greatly to the benefit of the Divinity students in London, and to some of the younger clergy, if they could meet for practical training in preaching, broached the idea to two or three of his elder brethren; one of whom suggested that halfa-dozen well-known names should be obtained and appended to a letter inviting some of the elder clergy to confer upon the subject. This was accordingly done; a sub-committee was appointed, and a second conference held. The following circular was then drawn up, and sent to each of the sixteen hundred clergy named in Mackeson's Guide to the Churches of London and its Suburbs, also to a hundred and thirty candidates for Holy Orders: that is to say, to the students at the Church Missionary, King's, and St. John's Colleges, and those reading with the Master of the Temple :
