ADDITION. What is the collecting of numbers together in one sum called? Ans. Addition.

What is the collecting of several numbers of the same kind, or denomination called? Ans. Simple Addition.

What do you mean by the same kind, or denomination? Ans. All pounds, all dollars, all cents. or 'all drams, &c.

What hand begin 'to add? Ans. Right. How do yon carry? Ans. One for every ten, or set down the right hand figure, and carry the left hand figure or figures to the next column. What do you mean by carrying so may as you

have tens? Ans. Add so many to the next columt:

What is the proof? Ans. Cut off the upper line, and find the amount of the rest; then if this amount and upper line when added, be equal to the first . amount, the work is right.

Why begin to add to the right hand? Ans. Because figures increase from the right to the lefl.

Why carry one for every ten Ans. Because ten anits makes one ten, and tea tens one hundred and so on.

To illustrate: You have 4 marbles in one hand, and six in the other, how many have you in both · hands?

How many are four and six then?

By what name are 4 and 6 added together called Ans. Amount.

EXAMPLES.

You bought an orange for nine cents, and a melJon for 15 cents; what did you pay for both?

James bought a top for 6 cents, a knife for 12 cents, and an inkstand for 8 cents; how much did they all come to?

Harry, and James lose some money, James lost 20 cents, and Harry 12; how much did they both lose?

A boy laid out ten cents in marbles, 8 cents in quills, 6 cents for a slate pencil; how much did he lay out in all?

You give 20 cents for Practical Arithmetic, 8 cents for a ruler, 9 cents for an inkstand, and lose 6 cents;-how much money has gone from you?

A man gave his children money in the following manner; to his oldest 3 dollars, to James 5 dollars, to Thomas 9 dollars and to his two daughters 4 dollars
