Application and use of Multiplication by Federat

Money and whole numbers.

Note. The application of this rule, by examples, which are of daily occurrence, necessarily involves dollars and cents, therefore it was thought best, that it should consist of Federal Money and whole numbers promiscuously.

How is the multiplicand to be written down in Federal Money?. Ans. As in whole numbers.

If the cents are less than ten; where must a cypher be put in writing them downı? Ans. In the dimes' place or between the dollars and cents.

How multiply? Ans. As in whole numbers.

How many places do you relain in the product, for dimes, cents, and mills? Ans, As many as are in the Multiplicand.

To multiply by 10, 100, or 1000 the easiest way: what is the rule? Ans. Put as many cyphers to the right of the multiplicand, as there are cyphers in the multiplier. For example:

Multiply 24 by 10.
Multiply 24 by. 100.

Multiply 24 by 1000. What is multiplication, a short way of perforniiug? Ans. Several additions.

How many times must the multiplicand be added to itself to do the sum by Addition? Ans. As many times as there are units in the multiplier.

What do you mean by units in the multiplier, suppose for instance, that your multiplier is 100, how many units are there in it? Ans. 100.

Suppose rour multiplicand is 100, and your multiplier 99, how many times would you have to add 100 to itself to get the same answer as in multipli. eation? Ans. 99.

What does this prove? Ans. That multiplication is a short way of performing several additions.
