of proper names, etc.

C. F. KRAUSS,

Teacher of German at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the Girls' High

School, Boston.

These books were prepared by PROF. KRAUSS for use in his own classes, and embody those methods of instruction by means of which his own marked success in teaching has been obtained.

Having used several German-English Grammars without finding any of them satisfactory, the author finally concluded to prepare a book which, given into the hands of his pupils, would enable him to teach according to the methods and system he wished to follow. In doing this, he has endeavored to unite such principles and ideas as are both rational and practical, and to embody them in a book suitable for beginners. How successful he has been in this endeavor is evinced by the fact, that, on its appearance, the book was received with warmest commendations, from teachers and students of the language, under whose examination it came, and was adopted for use in HARVARD COLLEGE, The MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, The GIRLS' HIGH SCHOOL OF BOSTON, and other prominent schools, all of which are using the books with increasing satisfaction. The works will now be published by THOMPSON, BIGELOW & BROWN, who have just issued a new edition in a superior style of manufacture.

RECOMMENDATIONS.

The great stronghold of Krauss's system is simplicity, thoroughness, and practicability.OSCAR FAULHABER, Teacher of German, Haverhill.

The "First Book in German" is so well planned as a companion to the compact" Elements of German Grammar," that the two seem to contain everything the student needs for overcoming all the first difficulties of the language.-W. P. ATKINSON, Professor in Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The "Elements of German Grammar" has the merit of being accurate and concise, containing all that is needed by beginners, without giving so many details as to confuse and bewilder the student. THOMAS P. ADAMS, Teacher in Cambridge High School.

Krauss's "First Book in German" does not claim to teach German grammmar, but German itself, and must succeed. For reference, we have the "Elements of German Grammar," which, as a comprehensive and philosophically arranged text-book we have never seen surpassed. In short, the "Elements" is as much an improvement upon German Grammars, as the "First Book" is upon methods of teaching the language. - National Quarterly Review, December, 1872.

All teachers of German who desire a practical, rational, and brief text-book, for beginners in the study, will do well to examine Prof. Krauss's First Book in German, and Elements of German Grammar. They will be sent by mail to school

officers and teachers for examination on

receipt of half price.
