An Act to provide more effectually for the Collec tion of the Duties impofed by Law on Goods, Wares and Merchandize imported into the United States, and on the Tonnage of Ships er Veffels Section 1. B E it enacted by the Senate and Houfe of Reprefentatives of the United States of America in Congress affembled," That for the collection of the duties impofed by law on goods, wares and merchandize imported into the United States, and on the tonnage of fhips or veffels, there fhall be established and appointed, diftricts, ports and officers, in manner following; to wit: The state of New-Hampshire fhall be one perts in diftrict, to be called the diftrict of Portsmouth, Hampshire. of which the town of Portsmouth fhall be the fole port of entry; and the towns of Newcaftle, Dover and Exeter, ports of delivery only but all fhips or veffels bound to or from either of the faid ports of delivery, fhall firft come to, enter and clear at Portimouth; and a collector, naval-officer and furveyor for the faid district shall be appointed, to refide at Portsmouth. Manachu In the ftate of Maffachusetts fhall be twenty diftricts and ports of entry; to wit: New- Districts & buryport, Gloucester, Salem and Beverly, as ports in one; Marblehead, Bofton and Charleftown, as fetts. one; Plymouth, Barnftable, Nantucket, Edgartown, New-Bedford, Dighton, York, Biddeford and Pepperelborough, as one; Portland, and Falmouth, as one; Bath, Wifcaffett, Penobfcot, Frenchman's Bay, Machias and Paffamaquady. To the diftrict of Newburyport fhall be annexed the feveral towns or landing places of Almsbury, Salisbury and Haverhill, which fhall be ports of delivery only; and a collector, naval-officer and furveyor for the district shall be appointed, to refide at Newburyport. To the diftrict of Gloucefter fhall be annexed the town of Manchester, as a port of delivery only; and a collector and surveyor fhall be appointed, to refide at Gloucefter. To the diftrict of Salem and Beverly fhall be annexed the towns or landing places of Danvers and Ipfwich, as ports of delivery only; and a collector, naval-officer and furveyor for the district shall be appointed, to refide at Salem, and a furveyor to refide at each of the towns of Beverly and Ipfwich. To the district. of Marblehead fhall be annexed the town of Lynn, as a port of delivery only; and a collector for the diftrict fhall be appointed, to refide at Marblehead. To the diftrict of Boston and Charlestown fhall be annexed the towns or landing places of Medford, Cohaffet and Hingham, as ports of delivery only; and a ports in fetts. Districts & collector, naval-officer and furveyor fhall be Mafiachu- appointed to refide at Boston. To the district of Plymouth fhall be annexed the feveral towns or landing places of Scituate, Duxbury and Kingston, as ports of delivery only; and a collector for the diftrict fhall be appointed, to refide at Plymouth. To the diftrict of Barnftable fhall be annexed the feveral towns or landing places of Sandwich, Falmouth, Harwich, Welfleet, Provincetown and Chatham, as ports of delivery only; and a collector for the district fhall be appointed, to refide at Barnftable. To the diftrict of Nantucket the port of Sherburne fhall be the fole port of entry and delivery within the fame, and a collector fhall be appointed, to refide at Sherburne. In the diftrict of Edgartown a collector fhall be appointed, to refide at Edgartown. To the diftrict of New-Bedford fhall be annexed Westport, Rochester and Wareham, as ports of delivery only; and a collector for the diftrict fhall be appointed, to refide at NewBedford. To the district of Dighton fhall be annexed Swanfey and Freetown, as ports of delivery only; and a collector for the diftrict fhall be appointed, to refide at Dighton. To the diftrict of York fhall be annexed Kittery and Berwick, as ports of delivery only; and a collector for the diftrict fhall be appointed, to refide at York. To the diftrict of Biddiford and Pepperelborough fhall annexed Scarborough, Wells, Kennebunk and Cape Porpoile, as ports of delivery only; and a collector for the diftrict fhall be appointed, to refide at Biddeford. To the diftrict of Portland and Falmouth fhall be annexed North-Yarmouth and Brunswick, as ports of delivery only; and a collector and furveyor fhall be apppointed ports in for the district, to refide at Portland. To the Districts & district of Bath fhall be annexed Hollowell, MaffachuPittstown and Topfham, as ports of delivery fetts.. only; and a collector for the district shall be appointed, to refide at Bath. To the district of Wifcaffet fhall be annexed Bristol, Boothbay, Warren, Thomafton and Waldoborough, as ports of delivery only; and a collector for the district shall be appointed, to refide at Wiscaffet. To the diftrict of Penobscot fhall be annexed Frankfort, Sedgwick-Point and DeerIfland, as ports of delivery only; and a collector for the district shall be appointed, to reside at Penobscot. To the district of Frenchman's Bay fhall be annexed Union River, as a port of delivery only; and a collector for the dif trict shall be appointed, to refide at Frenchman's Bay. For each of the districts of Machias and Paffamaquady fhall be appointed a collector, to refide at the faid ports of Machias and Paffamaquady, refpectively. The district of Newburyport fhall include all the waters and fhores from the state of New-Hampshire to the north line of Ipfwich. The district of Gloucefter fhall include all the waters and fhores in the towns of Gloucefter and Manchefter. The district of Salem and Beverly fhall include all the fhores and waters within the towns of Ipfwich, Beverly, Salem and Danvers. The dif trict of Marblehead fhall include all the waters and fhores within the towns of Marblehead and Lynn. The diftrict of Boston and Charlestown fhall include all the waters and fhores within the counties of Middlefex and Suffolk. The district of Plymouth, fhall include all the waters and fhores within the county of Plymouth, excepting the towns of Wareham and Rochefter. The diftrict of ports in Matlachu fetts. Districts & Barnftable fhall include all the fhores and waters within the county of Barnstable. The diftrict of Nantucket fhall include the island of Nantucket. The diftrict of Edgartown fhall include all the waters and fhores within the county of Duke's County. The district of NewBedford fhall include all the waters and fhores within the towns of New Bedford, Dartmouth, Weftport, Rochester and Wareham, together with all the islands within the county of Briftol. The diftrict of Dighton fhall include all the waters and fhores on Taunton river, and in the town of Rehoboth; and the collectors of the feveral diftricts within that part of the ftate of Maffachusetts eastward of New-Hampfhire, fhall agree, as foon as may be, upon a divifional line between their refpective districts, and tranfmit the fame to the comptroller of the treafury; and fuch diftricts, fo agreed upon, fhall include all the fhores, waters and islands within the fame. And in cafe of difagreement between any of the faid collectors, concerning fuch divifional line, the Secretary of the Treasury fhall determine the fame. Districts & In the ftate of Rhode-Ifland and Proviports in R. dence Plantations, there fhall be two dif ifland, &c. tricts; to wit: The diftrict of Newport, and the diftrict of Providence. The diftrict of Newport fhall comprehend all the waters, fhores, bays, harbors, creeks and inlets, from the weft line of the faid ftate all along the fea coaft and northward up the Narraganfet Bay, as far as the moft cafterly part of Kinnimicut Point at high water mark; and fhall include the feveral towns, harbors, and landing places at Wefterly, Charlefton, South-Kingitown, North-Kingftown, Eaft-Greenwich, and all that part of Warwick fouthward of the lati |
