The Telephone

The monthly charge of a residence telephone depends on whether one is on a one-party line, a two-party line, or a four-party line. Here are the residence rates for one city.

Business telephone service is generally limited as to the number of outward calls. Here are the business rates in the same city.

The above rates are local rates for service within the city or town or local district. When one telephones outside the city, there is an extra charge, called a toll rate, which depends on the distance to the point to which one is telephoning and the length of the telephone conversation.

Here is a table of rates from a certain city to other towns and cities.

From this table we see that if a person talked to town

B for 6 minutes, he would have to pay $.55 for the first three

minutes and $.45 for the next three minutes, making a total

charge of $1.00.

Last month a business office made 210 telephone calls. How much was the bill for the month?

In this exercise make use of the rates given on page 189. 1. Find the yearly rate of a one-party line; a two-party line; a four-party line.

2. Mr. Jones had a single party line installed. Find the cost for the six months, including installation.

Find the cost of the following toll calls to the towns and for the times indicated.

[blocks in formation]

11. Mr. James is on a four-party line. In September he had four three-minute calls to town A and two three-minute calls to town C. What was his bill for the month?

12. Mr. Jordan is on a two-party line. In October he had an 8-minute call to town A and a five-minute call to town G. What was his bill for October?

13. Mr. Steele had 420 calls on his business office telephone last month. What was his bill?

14. Secure your local telephone rates and make up problems similar to those in this exercise.

Using the chart you have just made, find the cost of these purchases, counting a fraction of a cent as a whole cent. Amounts given at the end of purchases tell what was given to the clerk. In such cases find the amount of change returned.

Health Problems

Perhaps you have often wondered why some people weigh too much and others weigh too little. Scientists have found that one's weight depends, to some extent, on the amount of energy taken into the body through food. Just as we measure weight in pounds, we measure this food energy in "calories." The number of calories in a certain weight of food varies according to the kind of food. For instance, one glass of milk will give you as much energy as four peaches. The number of calories needed by a person to keep him at normal weight depends on his age, size, and occupation. A moderately active man needs about 2,800 calories a day; a woman or a growing boy or girl needs about 75% as much. Anyone who eats more than he needs is apt to gain in weight; anyone who eats less is usually below weight.

Here is a table of the number of calories in an average helping (a. h.) of some of our most common foods.
