Here is the standing of the American League teams and the National League teams at the close of a recent baseball season, showing the games won and lost by each team.

The New York Americans won 61% of their games and the New York Nationals won 60.4% of their games. Find the other per cents by dividing the number of games each. team won by the total number of games it played. Carry the result to three decimal places.

Finding a Number when a per Cent of it is Given

The principle just given enables us to find a number when a part of it or a per cent of it is known.

A. 36 is of what number?

Calling the required number N, we have

4. The expenses of an entertainment were $70. This was 35% of the receipts. How much money was taken in? 5. Robert sold his bicycle for $26. This was 65% of what it cost him. How much did the bicycle cost?

6. Mr. Jacobs bought a lot for $1,800. This is 30% of what it cost to build a house on it. How much did the house cost?

7. At a boys' club meeting, This is 75% of the membership. How many boys belong? 8. Mr. Peters sold a horse for $240, gaining 20%. How much did the horse cost him?

(A gain of 20% means 120%, or of the cost.)

9. Mr. Brown sold his house for $4,250 at a loss of 15%How much did the house cost him?

(A loss of 15% means 85% of the cost.)

5. The Columbia River is 331% as long as the Mississippi River, which is 4,200 miles long. How long is the Columbia River?

6. Mr. Johnson raised 64 acres of corn this year. This is 80% of the amount he raised last year. How many acres did he raise last year?

7. Last summer Bob Reynolds won 72 of the 120 sets of tennis he played. What per cent of the sets did he win?

8. One week Mr. Benson saved $15. This was 30% of his week's salary. How much does he earn per week?

9. One day 6% of the 450 Barrows School pupils and 5% of the 580 Washington School pupils were absent. What was the combined attendance of both schools that day?

10. A man accepted a position at a salary of $2,000 with the understanding that his salary would be increased 10% the next year. How much did his salary amount to in these two years?

11. A man paid $450 cash on a $750 automobile. per cent of the cost was the cash payment?
