No matter how much or how little a person earns, it is a wise plan to form the habit of putting aside a certain amount each week or each month to provide for some special object or for future need. Boys and girls often wish to buy a sled, a camera, a ball bat, or some other article, but the price seems so much that they give up the thought of ever having enough to purchase the desired article. They do not realize that if they save even a small amount each week, they will not only put aside enough to make the purchase, but they will have the great satisfaction of knowing that they are buying the sled or the camera or the bat out of their own earnings and savings.

PROBLEMS

1. Bob wanted to own a good baseball bat. He saw one that he liked for $1.00. The first of February he began putting aside two cents a day. In how many weeks did he save enough to buy the bat?

2. John earns about 30 cents a week. He decides to save two cents each week day in order to buy a book on radio. The book costs $1.20. In how many weeks will he save enough to buy it?

3. In order to wind her clock, Mary has to put a nickel in it every night. How much will she save if she keeps this clock going for a year?

4. Richard saved 25 cents a week for one year. To how much did this amount?

5. Mr. Johnson wished to buy a building lot that cost $700. He saved a dollar a day for two years. Did he save enough in this time to buy the lot?

6. Grace wished to buy a pencil that cost 60¢. She saved 3 cents each school day. How long did it take her to save enough to buy the pencil?

7. Albert's father wished to buy a portable typewriter that cost $50. He put aside $2.50 a week for this purpose. In how many weeks did he save enough to buy the typewriter?

8. Tom delivers papers and saves 5 cents each week day. At this rate, counting 313 week days in a year, how much will he save in one year?

INTEREST

While it is an excellent plan to save money at home, such money lies idle and has no earning power.

It is much better, when the amount becomes $1.00 or more, to put the money in a savings bank or elsewhere where it will draw interest.
