4. If you were given an alloy of silver and copper, how would you determine the percentage of each metal present?

5. 2.4 grammes of magnesium was heated in a combustion tube, and a current of dry hydrogen chloride was passed over it until the whole of the metal was converted into chloride. The hydrogen evolved was measured at a pressure of 779 m.m., and temperature of 14° C. Calculate its volume under these conditions; and also the weight of each product of the reaction.

6. Describe how the following metals are extracted from their ores, and give their chief physical and chemical properties:-Zinc, lead, and tin.

7. Explain the term compound radicle, and illustrate your meaning by examples.

PHYSICS.

1. A 32-lb. shell, travelling with a speed of 500 feet per second separates, on bursting, into two fragments of 20 and 12 lbs. each. The heavier travels forward with a speed of 1,600 feet per second; find the amount and direction of the velocity of the smaller piece. Calculate also the change of kinetic energy in the act of bursting.

2. State the third law of motion, and describe any experiments by which it might be directly verified.

3. The specific gravity of pure gold is 19.265, of copper 8.945, of standard gold 18.405. Find the proportion of copper in standard gold.

4. Describe and give the full theory of some good method of determining the coefficient of expansion of a liquid.

5. How would you determine the specific heat of a liquid (such as alcohol), which evolves heat when mixed with water? Give a complete account of the method you would adopt, and give its theory.

6. Explain clearly what is involved in the statement that "the dynamical specific heat of water is 42 million ergs."

7. Describe some method (graphical or other) for determining the relative strength and direction of the magnetic field at different points near to a bar magnet.

8. Shew that electrification is measurable, and explain the term unit of electric quantity.

Two small spheres, each of mass one gramme, are placed at a distance of 5 cm. apart, and each receives a positive charge of 2 units; what is the initial relative acceleration with which they begin to separate?

9. Explain the construction of the Tangent Galvanometer, and give its theory.

PHYSIOLOGY.

1. What is understood by the expression internal respiration or respiration of the tissues? From what experimental evidence do we obtain our knowledge concerning it?

2. Describe the minute structure of the Retina. What are its functions?

3. What is Glycogen? Where and how is it formed, and what are its uses ?

4. Contrast the digestive systems of fish, amphibia, and mammals.

5. Describe the development of the ovule of an angiosperm, and the process by which it becomes a seed.
