SECT. II.

ADDITION of WEIGHTS, MEASURES, &C.

RULE.

LWAYS begin with those figures of the loweft or least denomination, and add them altogether into one fum then confider how many of the next fuperior denomination are contained in that fum, fo many units you must carry to the faid next superior denomination, to be added together with thofe figures that ftand there; and if any thing remain over, that overplus muft be fet down underneath its own denomination; but if you cannot otherways discover how many of the next fuperior denomination are contained in that fum, divide it by the number of units contained in one of the next denomination fuperior thereto, and fet down the remainder, and carry the quotient. And fo proceed on from one denomination to another, until all be finished.

A merchant buys up fix bags of Canterbury hops, No 1. of which weighed 2 cwt. 2 qrs. 10 lb.; N° 2. 2 cwt. 1 qr. 16 lb.; N° 3. 2 cwt. o qrs. 24 lb.; No 4, 2 cwt. 3 qrs. only; N° 5. 2cwt; 1 qr. 12 lb.; N°6. 2 cwt I qr. 16 lb.; befides a couple of pockets, ditto, that weighed 58 lb. each. How many hundreds weight has he to pay carriage for, on bringing them to town?

SECT. IV.

REDUCTION.

REDU

EDUCTION alters or changes any fuperior denomination propofed, into any inferior or leffer denomination required; ftill keeping them equivalent in value." And the contrary.

RULE.

Confider how many units of the denomination required, make one of that denomination propofed to be reduced (which is eafily known by its refpective table) and with that number of units multiply or divide the denomination propofed, and their product, or quotient, will be the number required.
