Why 1? Because 11 and 1 more make 12; therefore, if we take the 11 from 12, 1 will remain.

2. If you had 14 turkeys, and should sell 12 of them, how many turkeys would you have left? Why? 3. Calvin had 14 ducks, but he gave 11 of them for a peacock; how many ducks has he now? Why?

4. A boy carried 15 chickens to market, and sold 12 of them to an innkeeper, and the remainder to a bookseller; how many chickens did he sell to the bookseller? Why?
