In 2001 a conference was held at the University of Wales Gregynog discussing the life and works of F W Hasluck, a largely overlooked scholar who worked principally on the successive cultures of the Balkans and Anatolia during his career. His lack of major publications, his failure to conform to, or duly acknowledge, the conventions of institutional politics, and his premature death at only 42, perhaps explains the lack of attention paid to his work. However these two volumes look in detail at the life and career of Hasluck through a series of 39 essays by leading researchers in Classical, Near Eastern and Balkan archaeology. Just some of the subjects discussed are: heritage and archaeology in the Balkans; nationalism; culture and ideology; the Schools abroad; continuities and causality in the cultural record; religious syncretism'. Papers from the conference are accompanied by other invited contributions.
