2 Et les barbares nous traitaient avec beaucoup d'humanité; car ils allumèrent un grand feu, et ils nous reçurent tous chez eux, à cause de la pluie qui tombait sur nous, et du froid.

3 Alors Paul ayant ramassé quelque quantité de sarmens, et les ayant mis au feu, une vipère en sortit à cause de la chaleur, et s'attacha à sa main.

4 Et quand les barbares virent cette bête qui pendait à sa main, ils se dirent les uns aux autres: Assurément, cet homme est un meurtrier, puisque après qu'il a été sauvé de la mer, la vengeance ne permet pas qu'il vive.

5 Mais lui, ayant secoué la vipère dans le feu, n'en reçut aucun

mal.

6 Les barbares s'attendaient qu'il enflerait, ou qu'il tomberait mort subitement; mais après avoir attendu long-temps, lorsqu'ils virent qu'il ne lui en arrivait aucun mal, ils changèrent de sentiment, et dirent que c'était un dieu.

7 Il y avait dans cet endroit-là des terres qui appartenaient au plus considérable de l'île, nommé Publius, qui nous reçut et nous logea fort affectueusement, durant trois jours.

8 Et il se rencontra que le père de Publius était au lit, malade de la fièvre et de la dyssenterie. Paul l'alla voir; et ayant prié, il lui imposa les mains, et le guérit.

9 Cela étant arrivé, tous ceux de de l'île qui étaient malades, vinrent à lui, et ils furent guéris.

10 Ils nous firent aussi de grands honneurs, et, à notre départ, ils nous pourvurent de ce qui nous était nécessaire.

11 Trois mois après, nous partîmes sur un vaisseau d'Alexandrie, qui avait passé l'hiver dans l'île, et qui portait pour enseigne Castor et Pollux.

2 And the barbarous people shewed us no little kindness: for they kindled a fire, and received us every one, because of the present rain, and because of the cold.

3 And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks, and laid them on the fire, there came a viper out of the heat, and fastened on his hand.

4 And when the barbarians saw the venomous beast hang on his hand, they said among themselves, No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he hath escaped the sea, yet vengeance suffereth not to live.

5 And he shook off the beast into the fire, and felt no harm.

6 Howbeit they looked when he should have swollen, or fallen down dead suddenly: but after they had looked a great while, and saw no harm come to him, they changed their minds, and said that he was a god.

7 In the same quarters were possessions of the chief man of the island, whose name was Publius; who received us, and lodged us three days courteously.

8 And it came to pass, that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever and of a bloody flux: to whom Paul entered in, and prayed, and laid his hands on him, and healed him.

9 So when this was done, others also, which had diseases in the island, came, and were healed:

10 Who also honoured us with many honours; and when we departed, they laded us with such things as were necessary.

11 And after three months we departed in a ship of Alexandria, which had wintered in the isle, whose sign was Castor and Pollux.

12 Et étant arrivés à Syracuse, nous y demeurâmes trois jours. 13 De là, en côtoyant la Sicile, nous arrivâmes à Rhège. Et un jour après, le vent du midi s'étant levé, nous vînmes en deux jours à Pouzzol,

14 Où ayant trouvé des frères, ils nous prièrent de demeurer avec eux sept jours; et ensuite nous partîmes pour Rome.

15 Et les frères qui y étaient, ayant appris de nos nouvelles, vinrent au-devant de nous jusqu'au marché d'Appius et aux trois hôtelleries; et Paul les voyant, rendit grâces à Dieu, et prit courage. 16 Quand nous fûmes arrivés à Rome, le centenier mit les prisonniers entre les mains du préfet du prétoire; mais à l'égard de Paul, il lui permit de demeurer en son particulier, avec un soldat qui le gardait.

17 Trois jours après, Paul assembla les principaux des Juifs; et quand ils furent venus, il leur dit; Mes frères, quoique je n'eusse rien commis contre le peuple, ni contre les coutumes de nos pères, toutefois j'ai été fait prisonnier à Jérusalem, et mis entre les mains des Romains,

18 Qui, après m'avoir examiné, voulaient me relâcher, parce que je n'avais rien fait qui méritât la

mort.

19 Mais les Juifs s'y opposant, j'ai été contraint d'en appeler à César, sans que j'ai dessein néanmoins d'accuser ma nation.

20 C'est pour ce sujet que je vous ai appelés, pour vous voir et pour vous parler; car c'est à cause de l'espérance d'Israël que je suis lié de cette chaîne.

21 Et ils lui répondirent: Nous n'avons point reçu de lettres de Judée sur ton sujet; et il n'est venu aucun de nos frères qui ait rapporté ou dit aucun mal de toi.

12 And landing at Syracuse, we tarried there three days.

13 And from thence we fetched a compass, and came to Rhegium: and after one day the south wind blew, and we came the next day to Puteoli:

14 Where we found brethren, and were desired to tarry with them seven days and so we went toward Rome.

15 And from thence, when the brethren heard of us, they came to meet us as far as Appii Forum, and the Three Taverns; whom when Paul saw, he thanked God, and took courage.

16 And when we came to Rome, the centurion delivered the prisoners to the captain of the guard: but Paul was suffered to dwell by himself with a soldier that kept him.

17 And it came to pass, that after three days Paul called the chief of the Jews together: and when they were come together, he said unto them, Men and brethren, though I have committed nothing against the people, or customs of our fathers, yet was I delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans:

18 Who, when they had examined me, would have let me go, because there was no cause of death in

me.

19 But when the Jews spake against it, I was constrained to appeal unto Cesar; not that I had aught to accuse my nation of.

20 For this cause therefore have I called for you, to see you, and to speak with you: because that for the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain.

21 And they said unto him, We neither received letters out of Judea concerning thee, neither any of the brethren that came shewed or spake any harm of thee.

22 Néanmoins nous voudrions bien apprendre de toi, quels sont tes sentimens; car à l'égard de cette secte, nous savons qu'on s'y oppose par

tout.

22 But we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest: for as concerning this sect, we know that every where it is spoken against.

24 Les uns furent persuadés de ce qu'il disait; mais les autres ne crurent point.

25 Et comme ils n'étaient pas d'accord entre eux, ils se retirèrent, après que Paul leur eut dit cette parole: C'est avec raison que le Saint-Esprit a parlé à nos pères par Esaïe le prophète,

26 Et a dit: Va vers ce peuple, et dis-lui: Vous écouterez de vos oreilles, et vous n'entendrez point; et en voyant vous verrez, et n'apercevrez point.

27 Car le cœur de ce peuple est appesanti; ils ont ouï dur de leurs oreilles, et ils ont fermé leurs yeux, de peur que leurs yeux ne voyent, que leurs oreilles n'entendent, que leur cœur ne comprenne, qu'ils ne se convertissent, et que je ne les guérisse.

28 Sachez donc que le salut de Dieu est envoyé aux Gentils, et qu'ils l'écouteront.

29 Et quand il eut dit cela, les Juifs s'en allèrent, ayant de grandes contestations entre eux.

30 Mais Paul demeura deux ans entiers dans une maison qu'il avait louée, où il recevait tous ceux qui le venaient voir;

31 Prêchant le règne de Dieu, et enseignant les choses qui regardent le Seigneur Jésus-Christ, avec toute liberté et sans aucun empêchement.

24 And some believed the things which were spoken, and some believed not.

25 And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed, after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers,

26 Saying, Go unto this people, and say, Hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and not perceive:

27 For the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.

28 Be it known therefore unto you, that the salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles, and that they will hear it.

29 And when he had said these words, the Jews departed, and had great reasoning among themselves.

30 And Paul dwelt two whole years in his own hired house, and received all that came in unto him,

31 Preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ, with all confidence, no man forbidding him.

AUL, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God,

2 (Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy Scriptures,)

3 Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh;

4 And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:

9 For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers;

10 Making request, if by any means now at length I might have a prosperous journey by the will of God to come unto you.

11 For I long to see you, that I

12 C'est-à-dire, afin qu'étant parmi vous, nous nous consolions ensemble par la foi qui nous est commune, à vous et à moi.

13 Or, mes frères, je ne veux pas que vous ignoriez que j'ai souvent formé le dessein de vous aller voir, afin de recueillir quelque fruit parmi vous, comme parmi les autres nations; mais j'en ai été empêché jusqu'à présent.

14 Je me dois aux Grecs et aux Barbares, aux savans et aux igno

15 Ainsi, autant qu'il dépend de moi, je suis prêt à vous annoncer aussi l'évangile, à vous qui êtes à Rome:

16 Car je n'ai point honte de l'évangile de Christ, puisque c'est la puissance de Dieu, pour le salut de tous ceux qui croient, premièrement des Juifs, et ensuite des Grecs. 17 Car c'est dans cet évangile que la justice de Dieu est révélée de foi en foi, selon qu'il est écrit: Le juste vivra par la foi.

18 Car la colère de Dieu se déclare du ciel contre toute l'impiété et l'injustice des hommes, qui suppriment la vérité injustement;

19 Parce que ce qu'on peut connaitre de Dieu a été manifesté parmi eux, Dieu le leur ayant manifesté.

20 Car les perfections invisibles de Dieu, savoir, sa puissance éternelle, et sa divinité, se voient comme à l'œil, depuis la création du monde, quand on considère ses ouvrages; de sorte qu'ils sont inexcusables;

21 Parce qu'ayant connu Dieu, ils ne l'ont point glorifié comme Dieu, et ne lui ont point rendu grâces; mails ils se sont égarés dans de vains raisonnemens, et leur cœur destitué d'intelligence a été rempli de ténèbres.

12 That is, that I may be comforted together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me.

13 Now I would not have you ignorant, brethren, that oftentimes I purposed to come unto you, (but was let hitherto,) that I might have some fruit among you also, even as among other Gentiles.

14 I am debtor both to the Greeks, and to the Barbarians; both to the wise, and to the unwise.

15 So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also.

16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.

18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;

19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.

20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
