To collect from many sources into a single volume of moderate dimensions such counsels of writers of renown as might be serviceable to men of letters is the scope of the present work. The available materials, including frequent reiteration of similar precepts, are so vast that it is impossible to attempt a comprehensive record. A selection has been, therefore, made of what has appeared likely to be most acceptable rather to professional authors than to those who are only beginners or aspirants; but it is hoped that what is offered may prove serviceable to all. The labours of the compilers have consisted almost exclusively in co-ordinating and collating the views of indisputable authorities (to whose works references are given); and while there may be, in certain cases, room for
