Works done by unregenerate men although for the matter of them they may be things which God commands, and of good use both to themselves and to others: y yet because they proceed not from an heart purified by faith, z nor are done in a right manner, according to the word, a nor to a right end, the glory of God; b they are therefore sinful, and cannot please God, nor make a man meet to receive grace from God; c yet their neglect of them is more sinful and displeasing to God. d

CHAP. XVII.

Of the Perseverance of the Saints.

This perseverance of the saints depends not upon their own free will, but upon the immutability of the decree of election, from the free. and unchangeable love of God the Father b upon the efficacy of the merit and intercession of Jesus Christ, cand union with him, d the oath of God, e the abiding of his Spirit, and the seed of God within them, and the nature of the covenant of grace, g from all which ariseth also the certainty and infallibility thereof. h b II Tim. ii, 18, 19 Jer. xxxi. 33. c Heb. x, 10. 14, and xiii, 20, 21. and ix, 12, 13, 14, 15. CHAP. XVIII.

Of the Assurance of Grace and Salvation.

LTHOUGH temporary believers, and

ceive themselves with false hopes and carnal presumptions of being in the favour of God, and state of salvation, a which hope of theirs shall perish; b yet such as truly believe in the Lord Jesus, and love him in sincerity, endeavouring to walk in all good conscience before him may in this life be certainly assured that they are in the state of grace, c and may rejoice in the hope of the glory of God, which hope shall never make them ashamed. d

II.

This certainty is not a bare conjectural and probable persuasion, grounded upon a fallible hope; e but an infallible assurance of faith, founded on the blood and righteousness of Christ revealed in the gospel, f and also upon the inward evidences of those graces, unto which promises are made, g and on the immediate."

This infallible assurance doth not so belong to the essence of faith, but that a true believer may wait long and conflict with many difficulties before he be partaker of it; k yet being enabled by the Spirit to know the things which are freely given him of God, he may without extraordinary revelation, in the right use of ordinary means, attain thereunto. And therefore it is the duty of every one, to give all diligence to make their calling and election sure, m that thereby his heart may be enlarged in peace and joy in the Holy Ghost, in love and thankfulness to God, and in strength and cheerfulness in the duties of obedience, the proper fruits of this assurance; n so far is it from inclining men to looseness. o
