In the thousands of schools of various sorts scattered over this country, countless thousands of German boys and girls are being taught the English language. The various "Lehrbücher" which they are made to study for this purpose have all been written by Germans. learned and busy German Professors, with many claims upon their valuable time, only a fraction of which they have been able therefore to devote to English studies. These books are necessarily full of imperfections; the teachers of English, however, had no choice but to use them, for the excellent reason that there were no others. As yet no Englishman, equipped with a thorough knowledge of the German language, and long experience in teaching his native tongue in the Fatherland, had undertaken the task of providing a more suitable work. That day is now past. For more than ten years I have devoted myself exclusively to the teaching of the English language in this country. During that time I have given something over 20,000 English lessons. No other duties. or studies have distracted my attention from the one object of finding out the best way to teach English. I have experimented freely, (my thanks are due to the kind Principals of Schools and Pensionats, who have allowed me to do so unhindered), I have selected and rejected, evolved a method, tested it, and finally written it down in this book. You think the book is small; you say, "What, is this all?" Yes, it is all; all that is necessary for the pupil, no other book is required. It points a primrose path to learning, and eschews the steep and thorny way, along which so many thousands of German lads and lasses are patiently plodding, year after year, at the rate, in some cases, of nine lessons a week. In the course of a few months this book may be mastered by a child from cover to cover, and then there is no dreary series of volumes, each with its drearier "Anhang" to follow, but the happy child is free to acquire his English at first hand, to learn it as the English child does, by reading it and by using it not by talking about it.
