B. EXPLANATION.-Two parallel lines drawn thus, =, form what is called the sign of equality, which is often used in place of "are" in such cases as "2+2 are 4," which would then be written "2+2 4." This may be read "2 and 2 are 4," or "2 plus 2 are 4," or "2 plus 2 equal 4."
