EXPLANATION.-A single mark made like a dash, is often used in place of the word "less." For instance: "8-3-5" means the same as "8 less 35.”

He afterwards found 4 more, when, seeing a pretty squirrel run into a hole in a tree, he put in 3 chestnuts for the squirrel to eat. How many chestnuts had he left?

E. 1. A boy had 6 cents, and received a present of 2 more. How many did he then have ? He spent 3 cents, and then had 4 cents given him, after which he spent 5 cents. How many cents did he have left?

2. Daniel had a red basket which held 3 quarts, a blue one which held 4 quarts, and a yellow one which held 2 quarts, and he picked berries enough to fill them all. How many quarts of berries did he pick?

3. Arthur says that he has cherries enough to give 3 to Robert, and 3 to Martha, and still have 3 left for himself. How many cherries has he?

4. Daniel cannot find the answer to the question how many are 3+2+4-5-3+1+3+3-6? Can you tell him what it is?

5. How many more are 2+2 + 5 4 than 8-3-2?

6. Herbert's father gave him 3 books, his mother gave him 4, and his sister gave him enough to make up 9. 9. How How many did his sister give him?

7. Mr. Lee owned 6 cows, and Mr. Warren owned 2. How many did both own? Mr. Lee sold 3 cows to Mr. Warren. How many did each then own? How many did both? How many must Mr. Warren now sell to Mr. Lee in order that one may have as many as the other?
