LESSON XXXVII. ABOUT SURFACES AND SOLIDS. A. Land and all surfaces are measured by Square Measure. A square is a figure having four equal sides and four equal angles. This figure is a square. The angles are at the corners. NOTE. The teacher should illustrate and explain the nature of surfaces, angles, and squares, and the use of this measure. B. All solids, that is, all bodies which have length, breadth, and thickness, are measured by Cubic Measure. A cube is a solid whose length, breadth, and height are equal. This figure represents a cube. teacher will show you a cubical block. Your LESSON XXXVIII. HOW TIME IS RECKONED. A. Time is reckoned in hours, days, weeks, months, and years. Every fourth year is called Leap Year, and then February has 29 days. LESSON XXXIX. OTHER WAYS OF RECKONING. A. Things are sometimes reckoned by the dozen, by the gross, or by the score. B. Paper is sold by the sheet, by the quire, or by the ream. 24 sheets of paper = 1 quire. 20 quires of paper = 1 ream. C. Salt Beef, Salt Pork, and Flour are sold by the pound, or by the barrel. A barrel of beef weighs 200 lbs. D. 1. How many eggs are there in a dozen? 2. How many pigeons are there in a half-dozen? 3. How many cakes are there in a dozen and a half? 4. Rufus found 10 eggs in one nest and 8 in another. How many eggs did he find in all? How many dozen? 5. If a man's hens lay 3 eggs per day, how many days will it take them to lay a dozen? 6. How many sheets are there in a half-quire of paper? 7. How many quires of paper are there in a half 8. How many quires of paper are there in a quarter-ream? 9.
