HANDBOOK A CONVENIENT, REFERENCE BOOK FOR ALL PERSONS INTERESTED IN Plumbing, Steam Heating, Hot-Air Heating, Hot-Water Heating, Ventilation, and Sewerage BY INTERNATIONAL CORRESPONDENCE SCHOOLS, SCRANTON, PA. 1st Edition, 45th Thousand, 6th Impression SCRANTON, PA. INTERNATIONAL TEXTBOOK COMPANY PREFACE The growing demand for a book of reference devoted to the plumbing, heating, ventilating, and gas-fitting trades has induced the publication of the Plumbers and Fitters' Handbook, which is the first reference work of its kind, and will be found to contain more valuable information along the lines indicated by its title than any other book of its size yet published. It has been the aim of the publishers to present to the public a handy reference work that is not only of a size convenient to carry in the coat or hip pocket a pocketbook in reality as well as in name-but which also contains those rules, formulas, tables, etc.-together with explanations concerning them and practical examples illustrating their use, which are most commonly needed by the master mechanics and journeymen of the various trades covered. The publishers have not endeavored to produce a condensed encyclopedia of the art and practice of plumbing, heating, ventilation, and gas-fitting, but have striven to anticipate the daily wants of the user and to give him the information sought, in the manner best suited to his needs. The aim iii has been to meet the necessities not only of the mechanics in the trades mentioned, but also of all persons in any way interested in the design, construction, and maintenance of buildings and utilities pertaining thereto. In accomplishing this, the publishers have selected that rule, formula, or process which is, in their opinion, best adapted to the circumstances of the case, describing it fully, giving whenever possible full directions how and when to use it, and not mentioning other available methods when doing so would tend to confuse the reader. In other words, the selection has been made by the publishers instead of leaving it to the judgment of the reader. The Plumbers and Fitters' Handbook will be found a valuable aid to plumbers, heating and ventilating engineers, steam fitters, gas-fitters, architects, contractors, builders, building and plumbing inspectors, sanitary and civil engineers, superintendents and owners of buildings, traveling salesmen and solicitors for supply houses, etc. This handbook was prepared under the supervision of Mr. T. N. Thomson, Principal of the School of Plumbing, Heating, and Ventilation, assisted by the following members of our staff of textbook writers: Messrs. J. A. Grening, C. Wadsworth, L. H. Hall, and J.
