2 'Tis there that I the Gospel learn,
The mighty plan of faving grace:
"Tis there I read man's great concern,
And there I view my Saviour's face.
3 A book of knowledge 'tis to me,

A treasure vaft, its worth untold;
Without this prize I would not be,
For rocks of diamonds, hills of gold.
This to mine eyes hath been a light,
To guide me thro' this defert land
It chafes far the fhades of night,

;

And makes me wisdom understand. 5 Thanks, honour, glory, praife, might, pow'r, I render to the Lord of heav'n, And hope to praise him evermore, For his divine instruction giv'n

HYMN XII. Winchefler. 26. 6, 8.

* I LOVE thy facred word,

And thence my comforts draw,
Great joy thy promises afford,
Thy threat'nings strike with awe.

2 With joy thy name I trace,

Throughout the facred book; I feem to view my Father's face, Wherever I can look.

3 Thy word gives fuch delight,

To my diftreffed mind;

That when my fears and foes affright,

'Tis there that peace I find.

4 I read, I hear, I pray,

And caft on God my care,

Thus I furvive; and day by day;

Am ftrengthen'd still to bear.

5 Lord be my portion here,
My helper when I die,
Deliver me from fin and fear,
And raise my foul on high.

I

HYMN XIII. Newton. 8.

HAT was a wonder working word,

THA

Which could the vaft creation raife ! [

Angels attendant on their Lord,

Admir'd the plan and fang his praise.

2 From what a dark and fhapelefs mafs, All nature fprang at his command! Let there be light! and light there was, And fun and ftars: and fea, and land. 3 With equal fpeed the earth and feas,

Their mighty maker's voice obey'd;
He fpake! and ftrait the plants and trees,
And birds, and beafts, and man were made.

4 But man, the lord and crown of all,
By fin, his honour foon defac'd ;'
His heart! how alter'd fince the fall!
Is dark, deform'd, and void and waste.

5 The new creation of the foul

Does no lefs his pow'r difplay;
Than when he formed the mighty whole,
And kindled darkness into day.

6 Tho' felf-destroy'd, O Lord! we are,
Yet let us feel what thou canft do;
Thy word the ruin can repair,
And all our hearts create anew.

HYMN XIV.

WE praife thee Lord, and joyful own,
Thy kindness to the human race,
Has true records to man made known ;
Where he may peace and virtue trace.

[ocr errors]

2 Thy word is truth, no lie is there,
To lead aftray the human heart,
But all we fee, and all we hear,
Is truth unmix'd in ev'ry part.
3 Bright as the high meridian fun,
Wide it diffules light around,
That man may pains and forrows fhun,
And be of peace and mercy found.
4 Wide it expands the heart to know
The wonders of creating love,
That man may not in darkness go,
But in the light of wisdom move.
5 Truth there records examples bright
Of fuch as dared God obey,

That we may fee their glorious light,
And be as wife and good as they.
6 There we behold thy truth record,
The fins and forrows of mankind,
That we may cleave unto thee, Lord,
And by thy precepts cleanse our mind.
7 Jehovah, hail! we bless thy name,

And for thy word the fong would raife,
Soon o'er the earth its truths proclaim,
And all thy works their Lord fhall praise.

HYMNS FOR BAPTISM.

HYMN XV. 8.

YE who believe in Christ the Lord,
Where Providence fhall bid you go,

Proclaim to all, the gladd'ning word,
And make them Chrift the Saviour know.

[blocks in formation]

2 All who believing, Christ shall own,
Immerse them in Jehovah's name,
And in the name of Chrift the Son,
And in the Spirit's quick'ning flame.
3 Teach them to have an active love,
And Jeíu's precepts to obferve,
By words, and deeds, their faith to prove,
And never from his laws to swerve.

4 Jehovah's pow'r this faith fhall own,
The nations fhall believe the fign,
Their lives and doctrines fhall make known,
The hand that fent them is divine.

5 Father! eternally the fame,

I

May all behold Meffiah's face,

Thy pow'r make known, thy truth proclaim,
Now fhew the wonders of thy grace.

HYMN XVI. 8, 6.

ESUS, inftructed in thy word,

JESU

We now thy law fulfil,

And by it, owning thee our Lord,
Are bound to do thy will.

2 Mortals, our Master's fign behold,
View Jefus in the tomb !

There death the conqueror enfolds,
The grave becomes his home.

3 Now fee him rife from out the grave,
He leaves the bed of reft;
Jefus, the conq'ror comes to fave
His works by fin opprefs'd.

4 The eldest fons of Adam's race,
By him redeem'd from hell,
Aftonish'd at redeeming grace,
His loudest triumph fwell.

5 They fing the wonders he hath done,
And glad obey his will;
Joyful we join the grateful fong,
And Jetu's laws fulfil.

6 Saviour, we now would die with thee,
Be thou alone our Lord,

That we thy Kings and Priests may be,
And have a full reward.

HYMN XVI. 8, 6.

ETERNAL parent of mankind,
Great fource of ev'ry good,
Enlight'ned is our darken'd mind
By faith in Jefu's blood.

[ocr errors]

2 Sorrow, and doubt, and fear is gone,
We fee a parent's face,

And all thy boundless mercy own,
The wonders of thy grace.

3 We at the Saviour's crófs attend,
Aftonish'd at thy love!

For there fhall fin and forrów end,
In all that live or move.
Now his baptifmal fign we take,
Then rife from out the pool,
And in his ftrength our fins forfake,
And are by faith made whole.

5 Sinners, behold your dying Lord!
Believe and be forgiv'n,

Join now his Church with one accord,
And strive to enter Heav'n.

HYMN XVII. 8, 6.

ALOUD the Gofpel trump refounds!
Hear all ye fons of nien!

Jehovah's love to all abounds,
AFCome, and be freed from pain,
