HYMN XXIII. 8.

HAIL, Jefus, mafter of the feast,
Who me invites to be his guest,
With joy I view thy feftive board,
And hail thee Saviour, King, and Lord.
2 My fins I now remember well,
And can of many wand'rings tell,
But better pleas'd remember thee,
Who dy'd from fin to set me free.
3 By faith I view thy groans and tears,
And all my own defert appears :
I view thee more than doubly flain
By the malignant scoffs of men.
4 Thy body broken in my stead,

[ocr errors]

That I might eat of heav'nly bread,
With faints and angels join the feaft,
And fit with thee a welcome a guest!

Love fills my heart with joyful hope,
On wings of faith I now foar up,

And glad, the Church triumphant join,
And with thee, Saviour, drink the wine.
6 Here, we all now thy goodness prove,
There we fhall drink full draughts of love:
Triumphantly thy name adore,

And hail thy bounty, love, and pow'r,

HYMN XXIV. 8, 6.

FOUNTAIN of Wildom, thee we blefs
For Chrift, the Saviour, giv'n;

And with thine hoft above confefs
Him, Lord of earth and heav'n.

2 Heir of the glories of thy Throne,
He laid his honours by,
Our ev'ry fuff'ring made his own,
And heav'd the heart-felt figh.

3 Full well he knew each various state
That wretched mortals feel,

But would endure their awful fate,
Their ev'ry grief to heal.

4 Fram'd in adverfity's rough school,
He worthy is to reign,
Taught by obedience well to rule

The whole of thy domain.

5 Haste the glad time, when heav'n, earth, hell,
Shall with united voice,
And hearts fincere, his praises tell,

And in his love rejoice.

6 For he is worthy to receive

I

All pow'r, for he was flain,

That we, redeem'd, might to him live,
And joys inmortal gain.

HYMN XXV. II.

ALL-bounteous Sov reign, thy goodness we own,
And grateful adore thee, for Jefus, thy Son,
Perfect holiness loft, thro' him to restore
Thine image imparting, and kept evermore,
What aftonishing love to give up thy Son,
A covenant to make, refigning his crown,
To leave thy kind bofom, thy glory, thy throne,
Our weakness partaking, and die to atone.

2 His fuff'rings, his toils, his patience, his love,
His tenderness, courage, and wisdom, all prove
That thy covenant he exactly fulfill'd,

1

And crucify'd for us, our nature has heal'd;
The covenant he made by us is embrac❜d,
Its memorial we take, and now thare the feaft,
Thy fervants by purchase, thee Sov'reign we own,
And henceforth will ferve thee, and ferve thee alone.

HYMN XXVI. S.

THE night our Saviour was betray'd,

He this commemoration made:

He took the bread, and blefs'd that name
From which our ev'ry bleffing came;
Then brake, and bade his follow'rs take,
And eat it often, for his fake.

2 Then took the cup, endearing fign,
And blefs'd the giver of the wine,
From whom our ev'ry bleffing flow'd,
Then bade them drink the fign of blood,
And own him, purifier, flain,

Thro' whom they life reftor'd should gain.

3 With joy we join the chearful feast,
And love's memorials gladly tafte;
Whilft Jefus crucify'd we own,
Our prefent truft, our future crown;
Creation's rightful, fov'reign Lord,
Thro' whom our God fhall be ador'd.

HYMN XXVII. 8.

1 ESUS, our Saviour, took the bread, And blefs'd Jehovah, his great head:

[ocr errors]

We follow the example giv'n,

And praise thee, Lord, of earth and Heav'n.

2 Nature, obedient to thy pow'r,

Produces life's fuftaining store:

We take with thankful hearts the food,
And feel our frames with ftrength renew'd.

3 Blefs'd be thy name, thou fource of good,

For thus beftowing earthly food,

But higher praifes fhould be giv'n

That Chrift, thy fon, came down from Heav'n.

4 Thro' him we fee thy tender mind Streaming with love to all mankind, Inviting all of Adam's race

5

To the glad feast of sov'reign grace.
Thro' all temptations, toils, and pains,
Thy love our fainting fouls fuftains;
By faith on thee, thro' Jefus giv'n,
The bread of life fent down from Heav'n.

HYMN XXVIII. 7.

ET our hearts and voices join,
Whilft we facred praife entwine
Praife, Jehovah, is thy due

For our bleffings daily new.

2 At thy command, the teeming earth
Wine's enliv'ning juice pours forth;
This our drooping fpirit chears,
Banífhing our anxious cares.

3 At thy word our Saviour came,
Bore our forrows, pains, and shame,
Then pour'd forth his precious blood
To restore our fouls to God.

4 Whilft we drink the flowing wine,
Let our hearts and voices join,
Raife the fong of gratitude
To the Author of all good.
5 Here Jehovah's love is known,
Manifeft thro' Chrift, thy Son:
He hath our backfliding heal'd,
Man to God is reconcil'd.

6 Thro' him forrow and defpair
Shall be banish'd ev'ry where:
Now our God thy love we view,
We delight to love thee too.

7 Now we caft on thee our cares,
To preferve from error's fnares;
Make us in thy kingdom stand,
With thy Saints at thy right hand.

HYMN XXIX. 8.

OUR mem'ries now recall that night,
When wicked men our Lord betray'd,
Gave to the cross the Prince of Light,
Whilft all our fins his foul difinay'd.

2 He faw the diftant ages roll,

3

Before he fhould in pow'r appear,
And left to us this feaft of love,
To bring his full atonement near.
The bread he took, his Father blefs'd,
Then breaking, gavę, and bade them eat,
This emblem of his body brake,

Which they should for his fake repeat.
4 Then took the cup, and prais'd his name,
Whofe lib'ral hand the wine bestow'd,
Then gave, and bade them all to drink,
Type of his blood, that freely flow'd.

5 Memorial of that facred blood,

Of the new cov'nant made for man
Making known their fins forgiv'n,
That a new life might be began.

6 With thankful hearts the bread we break,
Partakers of th' unbounded good,
And grateful drink the flowing wine,
Bleft emblem of our Saviour's blood.

7 By faith may we march on our way,
Kept thro' thy pow'r, from falling free,
Till we fhall in thy kingdom ftand,
And eat and drink, O Lord, with thee.
