5. Name the geological formations in Great Britain which contain interbedded Igneous or Volcanic rocks.

6. Compare the Eocene strata of the basins of London and Hampshire, stating the beds or subdivisions which are respectively wanting in each.

7. Construct a section including three coal-fields, showing by the arrangement of the strata, how it is possible that coal may be found under the district lying between the first and second of these coal-fields, and may be entirely wanting between the second and third.

8. Describe or illustrate by diagrams the axial characters of the six systems of Crystallization.

9. State the reactions before the blowpipe, either with or without re-agents, by which you would distinguish Cobalt, Manganese, Mercury, Copper, and Zinc.

10. Name the principal minerals used as Gems, and give their hardness, specific gravity, and crystalline form.

11. By what associated fossil plants, would you consider any coal-bed to be of Paleozoic age ?

12. Name the genera of Cephalopoda that are characteristic and peculiar to the Secondary strata.

13. Mention six genera of fossils which are characteristic of the Paleozoic rocks.

14. Define Dip, Strike, Outcrop, and Contortion of strata.

15. Draw a section showing a set of inclined strata, traversed by an ordinary fault, and covered by horizontal beds not affected by the fault. State the inferences deducible from such an arrangement.

16. Give the range in time of the following genera: Lepidodendron, Calamites, Zamites, Ichthyosaurus, Nautilus, Spirifer, Productus, Goniatites, Cephalaspis, Beryx, Cidaris, Nummulites.

REPORT.

THE COUNCIL OF MILITARY EDUCATION have the honor to submit to His Royal Highness, the Field-Marshal Commanding-in-Chief, the following Report of the Open Competitive Examination for Admission to the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, which was held at the Royal Hospital, Chelsea, in January 1869.

The Examination commenced on Monday the 4th, and was continued according to the following arrange

The Morning Examinations commenced at half-past ten and ended at half-past one o'clock. The Afternoon Examinations began at half-past two and ended at half-past five. All the Examinations were conducted in writing. There were two Examiners in each of the subjects, excepting Geometrical Drawing and Free-Hand Drawing.

The duties of the Examination were undertaken by the following gentlemen

Mathematics. Rev. J. W. L. Heaviside, M.A., Canon of Norwich.-Rev. W. N. Griffin, M.A., late Fellow and Tutor of St. John's College, Cambridge.

Classics. Rev. G. Rawlinson, M.A., Camden Professor of Ancient History in the University of Oxford.-Rev. O. Gordon, B.D., late Censor of Christ's Church, Oxford.
