ENGLISH HISTORY.

1. When did the Romans first invade Britain, and when did✔ they finally abandon it? Give an account of the progress of their arms under Agricola.

2. Give a short account of the struggle between the Saxons and the Danes. Name the Danish Kings of England.

3. Give a list of the Plantagenet Kings, with the dates of their accession.

、4. Which of the English Kings since the Conquest usurped the throne ? Which of them met with a violent death, and under what circumstances?

5. In what way was Henry II. connected with the old Saxon line of Kings?

6. In which reigns have wars been carried on between England and France ? Mention (with dates) some of the most celebrated

engagements in these wars.

、 7. What English Kings were engaged in the Crusades?

8. How does the present Royal Family trace its descent from the house of Stuart ?

9. Give a short account of the reign of either Henry II. or✔ Elizabeth.

10. State the chief provisions of Magna Charta.

11. What was the Bill of Rights?✔

12. Mention the most distinguished men of letters who flourished in the reign of James I., and write a short account of one of them. 13. What were the causes which led to the outbreak of the "Great Rebellion ?"

14. In the case of each of the following battles, state in whose reign it was fought, who the contending parties were, and what the result was :-Flodden, Lexington, Tewkesbury, Culloden, Ramillies, Plassey, Marston Moor.

I. Translate into English:

Hac oratione ab Divitiaco habita, omnes, qui aderant, magno fletu auxilium a Cæsare petere cœperunt. Animadvertit Cæsar unos ex omnibus Sequanos nihil earum rerum facere, quas cæteri facerent, sed tristes capite demisso terram intueri. Ejus rei quæ causa esset miratus, ex ipsis quæsiit. Nihil Sequani respondere, sed in eadem tristitia taciti permanere. Cum ab his sæpius quæreret neque ullam omnino vocem exprimere posset, idem Divitiacus Eduus respondit: Hoc esse miseriorem et graviorem fortunam Sequanorum, quam reliquorum, quod soli ne in occulto quidem. queri neque auxilium implorare auderent.

II. Grammatical Questions.

1. State the case and contruction of-oratione, Divitiaco, fletu, quas, and hoc.

2. Write out the nominative and genitive in both numbers of oratione, fletu, capite, vocem.

3. Write out the present, perfect, and supine of petere, facere, permanere, exprimere, respondit.

4. To what classes of verbs do intueri and auderent belong?

MECHANICS.

1. Mention some of the general properties of matter.

2. Define force: distinguish statics and dynamics, accelerating force, and moving force.

3. How are forces represented by lines? Enunciate the parallelogram of forces, and give either a mathematical or an experimental proof of it.

4. Describe the lever; give examples of each kind. Explain the action of the human arm.

5. If two persons carry a weight of 18 lbs. between them by means of a pole 4 ft. long, what part of the weight is sustained by each, (i.) when the weight is in the middle, (ii.) when it is a foot from one end?

6. Define the centre of gravity of a body. How may it be found practically? When will a body rest or fall, when placed on a table?

7. Define stable, unstable, and neutral equilibrium. Show that a body rests in stable equilibrium when its centre of gravity is at the lowest point.

8. A particle not acted upon by any external force, will either remain at rest, or move uniformly in a straight line. Is this law deduced from reasoning or from experience? Mention any experiments in support of it.

9. State the laws of falling bodies. Assuming the accelerating effect of gravity to be 32 feet per second, find the velocity of a body at the end of 6 seconds, and the space described in the sixth second.

10. Explain the use of the governor in a steam-engine.
