PRELIMINARY GENERAL EXAMINATION.- -Midsummer, 1865.

TUESDAY, June 20th.-Morning, 12 to 13.

GEOGRAPHY.

[N.B.-Only six of the following Questions are required to be answered. Any six may be selected by the Candidate.]

1. In what English counties are the Pennine Range, the Peak, the Malvern Hills, the Wolds, the Cotswold Hills, Mendip Hills, Blackdown Hills, Chiltern Hills, South Downs, Dartmoor, Salisbury Plain, and the district of the Fens?

2. Name six principal seaports of England and Wales, six of Scotland, and six of Ireland, with the county to which each belongs.

3. Write a brief account of the geography of France, describing especially its river systems. Name the principal towns that fall within the respective basins of its chief rivers.

4. Enumerate the principal seaports that are situated, respectively, on the Baltic, Mediterranean, Black, White, and Caspian Seas.

5. Classify, under the respective headings of Empires, Kingdoms, and Grand Duchies, the principal states of continental Europe. Place against each the name of its capital, and state the situation of the latter.

6. Give some account of the geography of British India―as to natural features and divisions, climate, productions, and names of principal cities.

7. What possessions has Britain on the mainland, and what amongst the islands, of Africa? Name the chief articles of commerce derived thence.

8. Enumerate the British North American colonies, and give a brief account of the most important one amongst them-as to situation, natural features, climate, and productions, with names of principal towns.

9. In which of the United States of North America are, respectively, Boston, New York, Portland, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Richmond, Charleston, Cincinnati, Chicago, St. Louis, New Orleans, and San Francisco? Which amongst those places are within the Mississippi basin, which along the line of the Atlantic seaboard, and which on the coast of the Pacific?

10. Name the various Australian colonies, with the capital of each. Also the capital, and other principal towns, of New Zealand. Specify the respective situations of the places referred

1. A shilling is defined to be a coin weighing 3 dwt. 15 grs. Troy; and an old penny, to be a coin weighing 12 dwt. 33 grs. What is the difference in grs. between the weight of 11 shillings, and that of 3 penny pieces?

2. Divide £679. 16s. 8d. by 47, and prove it by Compound Multiplication.

3. Divide 171 cubic yds. 13 ft. by 59; and explain the difference between linear, superficial, and solid measures.

4. In 37 weeks 3 days 17 hours 12 minutes 35 seconds, how many seconds are there? Reduce twice the resulting number of seconds to years of 3651 days each.

5. Find the Least Common Multiple of 4, 6, 27, 18, 24, 30; and the Greatest Common Measure of the fraction 12331, and reduce it to its lowest terms.

7. Find the value of 82.534-2·056+76·051 —·529. Multiply 0018 by 018. Divide 0000324 by 0018; and find the value of •3409 × 814

8. What does a bankrupt pay in the pound, if his creditors receive £574. 13s. 111⁄2d. out of £7471. 1s. 51⁄2d. ?

10. Four persons invest capital in a manufactory to the respective amounts of £400, £600, £800, and £1000; if the profit at the end of the year amount to £350, what ought each to receive?
