6. Define an Affix and a Prefix. Point out the affixes in the following words, and state to what languages they are to be severally referred :-mixture, crisis, redness, wisdom, insolent, logarithmic, homeless, whiten.

7. Define an Impersonal Verb.

8. What is meant by the Imperfect and Pluperfect Tenses? Is there any difference in meaning between "I wrote a letter,” and "I have written a letter."

9. Explain and illustrate what is meant by the Extension of the Subject, and the Extension of the Predicate.

10. Write a brief essay on one of the three following subjects : -(i.) Lord Macaulay. (ii.) The Habits of some English Songbird. (iii.) The Safety Lamp.

GEOGRAPHY.

1. In what counties of Great Britain are the Malvern Hills, the Mendip Hills, the Weald, Dartmoor, the Lowther Hills, the Lammermuir Hills, Ben Nevis, Plinlimmon, and Snowdon?

2. Where are the following towns, and for what are they severally noted:- Dudley, Merthyr-Tydvil, Birkenhead, Axminster, Walsall, Sheffield, Paisley, Dundee, Scone, Wexford, Limerick, Queenstown? v

3. Enumerate the coal-fields of England and Wales, and give the counties in which they are respectively situated. State also the principal towns for the manufacture of cutlery, plated goods, engines and machinery.

4. Give some account of the following rivers, stating the locality of each, the sea into which it falls, and the most important towns on its banks: -Trent, Severn, Mersey, Forth, Clyde, Liffey.

5. Enumerate the principal manufactures of Scotland, Ireland, France, and Belgium, stating the localities in which they are respectively carried on.

6. Describe Denmark, Prussia, or Italy, in the following order :(i.) Boundaries. (ii.) Physical aspect. (iii.) Rivers, with chief towns. (iv.) Productions. (v.) Manufactures. (vi.) Government.

7. On a rough outline map of North America, mark the positions of New Orleans, Quebec, New York, (a) Victoria, Mexico, Richmond, (b) New Westminster, (c) Washington, (d) Montreal. Give particulars of (a), (b), (c), and (d).

8. Give the positions, the meanings, and the etymologies of the following names of places, &c.:-Buenos Ayres, Bombay, Tasmania, Anglesea, Cirencester, Stafford, Flamborough, (a) Natal, (b) Nova Scotia, Sahara, (c) Trinidad. Give particulars of (a), (b), and (c).

9. What are the principal articles of export from each of the following countries:-(i.) Australia; (ii.) Canada; (iii.) Jamaica; (iv.) Belize; (v.) New Brunswick; (vi.) Vancouver Island; (vii.) New Zealand; (viii.) Cape Colony; (ix.) Tasmania; (x.) Ceylon? Describe fully any

one of these countries.

10. Explain the geographical terms water-shed, delta, first meridian, archipelago, isthmus, plateau, zone, prairie, savannah, estuary. Give illustrations.

9. The butcher's bill for a family of 7 persons amounted to £4. 16s. 3d. for 5 weeks, when meat was 74d. per lb. What will it now amount to in a family of 9 persons, for 12 weeks, when meat is 10d. per lb.?

10. What will the commission of a country banker amount to, at per cent., on £63,943. 6s. 8d. ?

11. How many ounces of silver, at 5s. 6d. per ounce, are equivalent to 4 oz. 8 dwts. of gold, at £3. 17s. 10d. per oz. ?
