I. Translate into English:

Achmet III gouvernait alors l'empire de Turquie: il avait été mis en 1703 sur le trône à la place de son frère Mustapha, par une révolution semblable à celle qui avait donné en Angleterre la couronne de Jacques II à son gendre Guillaume. Mustapha, gouverné par son muphti, que les Turcs abhorraient, souleva contre lui tout l'empire; son armée, avec laquelle il comptait punir les mécontents, se joignit à eux: il fut pris, déposé en cérémonie, et son frère tiré du sérail pour devenir sultan, sans qu'il y eût presque une goutte de sang de répandue. Achmet renferma le sultan déposé dans le sérail de Constantinople, où il vécut encore quelques années, au grand étonnement de la Turquie, accoutumée à voir la mort de ses princes suivre toujours leur détrônement.-VOLTAIRE.

Let the worst come to the worst. What is the matter with you ? It is fair. Life is at stake. That will never do. Let me hear from you shortly.

(Β.) Καὶ διὰ τοῦτο ἐδίωκον τὸν Ἰησοῦν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι, καὶ ἐζήτουν αὑτὸν ἀποκτεῖναι, ὅτι ταῦτα ἐποίει ἐν σαββάτῳ. Ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἀπεκρίνατο αὐτοῖς, Ὁ πατήρ μου ἕως ἄρτι ἐργάζεται, κἀγὼ ἐργάζομαι. Διὰ τοῦτο οὖν μᾶλλον ἐζήτουν αὐτὸν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι ἀποκτεῖναι, ὅτι οὐ μόνον ἔλυε τὸ σάββατον ἀλλὰ καὶ πατέρα ἴδιον ἔλεγε τὸν Θεὸν, ἴσον ἑαυτὸν ποιῶν τῷ Θεῷ. ̓Απεκρίνατο οὖν ὁ Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, Αμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν, οὐ δύναται ὁ υἱὸς ποιεῖν ἀφ ̓ ἑαυτοῦ οὐδὲν, ἐὰν μή τι βλέπῃ τὸν πατέρα ποιοῦντα, ἃ γὰρ ἂν ἐκεῖνος ποιῇ, ταῦτα καὶ ὁ υἱὸς ὁμοίως ποιεῖ. II. Grammatical Questions.

1. Decline μαθηταὶ, στῆθος, ἐμβάψας, πατέρα, ἑαυτὸν, οὐδὲν.

2. State the voices, moods, tenses, numbers, and persons of ἐταράχθη, ἐμαρτύρησε, παραδώσει, πυθέσθαι, ἐζήτουν, βλέπῃ; and say what verbs they come from.

3. Write out the persons (singular and plural) of ἀπεκρίνατο, ἐζήτουν, ποιῇ, φίλει, δείκνυσιν, ποίησον.

4. Give the future, perfect, and aorist, (active voice) of ἐταράχθη, ἐπιπεσὼν, βάψας, ἀποκτεῖναι, εἰσῆλθε.

5. What prepositions occur in the first extract, either in compounds or by themselves? What cases may they govern?

6. What are the different kinds of augment used in Greek verbs ? Give examples from the extracts.
