PRELIMINARY GENERAL EXAMINATION.- -Midsummer, 1867.

GERMAN.

I. Translate into English :

1. Graf Wallenstein war es, ein verdienter Offizier, der reichste Edelmann in Böhmen. Er hatte dem kaiserlichen Hause von früher Jugend an gedient, und sich in mehreren Feldzügen gegen Türken, Venetianer, Böhmen, Ungarn und Siebenbürgen auf das Rühmlichste ausgezeichnet.

2. Der Prager Schlacht hatte er als Oberster beigewohnt, und nachher als Generalmajor eine ungarische Armee in Mähren geschlagen. Die Dankbarkeit des Kaisers kam diesen Diensten gleich, und ein beträchtlicher Theil der nach dem böhmischen Aufruhr confiscirten Güter war seine Belohnung.

3. Im Besitz eines unermeßlichen Vermögens, von ehrgeizigen Entwürfen erhigt, voll Zuversicht auf seine glücklichen Sterne, und noch mehr auf eine gründliche Berechnung der Zeitumstände, erbot er sich, für den Kaiser, auf eigene und seiner Freunde Kosten, eine Armee auszurüsten und völlig zu bekleiden, ja selbst die Sorge für ihren Unterhalt dem Kaiser zu ersparen, wenn ihm gestattet würde, ste bis auf fünfzigtausend Mann zu vergrößern.

4. Niemand war, der diesen Vorschlag nicht als die chimärische Geburt eines brausenden Kopfes verlachte-aber der Versuch war noch immer reichlich belohnt, wenn auch nur ein Theil des Versprechens erfüllt wurde. Wenige Monate, so standen zwanzigtausend Mann unter den Waffen, mit welchen er die österreichischen Gränzen verließ; bald darauf erschien er schon mit dreißigtausend an der Gränze von Niedersachsen. II. Grammatical Questions on the above passages. [N.B.-The questions may be answered in German or English.] 1. Write the gender, case, number, nominative and genitive singular, and nominative plural, of all the substantives in paragraphs 1 and 2.

2. Indicate the mood, tense, person, and number of all the verbs in paragraphs 3 and 4, and give the third person of the present and imperfect, and the past participle of all.

3. Conjugate the verb sich erbieten.

4. Write down all the prepositions in paragraphs 3 and 4, and indicate the cases they govern.

5. Explain why in paragraph 4, second sentence, the verb standen precedes its subject (zwanzigtausend Mann). Why is it Mann, and not Männer.

1. Give the leading characters which distinguish a monocotyledonous from a dicotyledonous plant.

2. Define the terms stamen, anther, pistil, raceme, umbel, cyme, and pericarp.

3. What is the function of the root in plants? Draw outlines, and give the names of the principal forms it assumes in plants.

4. Give the name, family, and native country of the plants which yield cork, cinnamon, cloves, coffee, black-pepper, and guttapercha.

5. Assign to their proper Class, Order, or Family, either in the Natural or in the Linnæan arrangement, the following plants: the bean, the daisy, the primrose, the lily, the carrot, the wall-flower, and the willow; and give, if you can, the scientific names of these examples.

II. ZOOLOGY.

1. Make a table of the principal orders of the Mammalia, with examples.

2. To what class and order of animals does the Silkworm belong? Describe the transformations which it undergoes.

3. What is there remarkable about the mode of reproduction of the Marsupialia?

4. Describe the structure of a sponge. To what division of the animal kingdom does it belong?

5. Arrange under the proper Order, Class, and Sub-kingdom, the following animals; and give, where you can, the proper systematic name of each :-the cow, the dog, the bat, the elephant, the hawk, the goose, the lobster, the oyster, the ant, and the butterfly.
