PRELIMINARY GENERAL EXAMINATION.-Midsummer, 1868.

TUESDAY, June 16th.--Morning, 10$ to 12.

ENGLISH GRAMMAR AND COMPOSITION.

1. Analyse, without parsing, the following passage :

“Thou may'st of double ignorance boast,

Who know'st not that thou nothing know'st.” 2. Give the force of that portion of the following words which is printed in Italics :- darling, inconvenient, terrific, aground, whoever, likewise.

3. To what parts of speech severally do you assign the following words:-see-saw, must, bliss, concerning, across, portentous?

4. What are the Saxon terminations signifying the male doer of an action ?

5. Give ten Greek prefixes which enter into the composition of nouns.

6. Name the Distributive and Indefinite Pronouns.

7. Define a Preposition.

8. Explain the various forms and give examples of the adverbial sentence.

9. “His work is one of the best that has ever been published.” “ His father is much taller than him.” Are these sentences correct? If not, correct them and state your reasons.

10. Write a short essay on Abyssinia, or give an account of some great public building, or some eminent man of the present century.

GEOGRAPHY.

1. Name the countries forming the south of the Continent of Europe ; describe their products, and name their important towns and rivers.

2. What are the boundaries of England and Wales (united)?

3. Mention the principal rivers of Ireland, with the towns situate on them.

4. Name the friths of Scotland, and the rivers that flow into them.

5. What are the chief mountain ranges of Europe ? in what countries are they, and in what direction do they run ?

6. Name the most important towns in the Eastern (or Home) Counties of England.

7. What are the mineral productions of England ? and where obtained ?

8. Name the chief towns of Russia.
9. Briefly describe the situation of the following :-
Bristol.
Launceston.

Chelmsford.
Newcastle. Lewes.

St. Neots.
Perth.
Yarmouth.

Peterborough
Oban,
Salisbury.

Caernarvon.
