ENGLISH HISTORY.

1. Give a list of the kings of England who were Danes.

2. What was Stephen's claim to the throne? Who opposed him, and what agreement was finally made between the claimants ?

3. When was Ireland invaded, and to some extent conquered, . by England? What pretext had this country for sending an army there? Who had the command of the expedition ?

4. Relate some particulars of the third Crusade, in which Richard I. joined.

5. What date do you assign to the commencement of the Legislative power of the House of Commons? Give some parti

culars.

6. Write a short account of Cardinal Wolsey. S.

7. Show plainly, in a tabular form, the relationship between Queen Elizabeth and Mary of Scotland.

8. When was the Habeas Corpus Act passed? What advantages did it confer on the people?

9. Where was the battle of Plassey fought? Who were the commanders on each side?

10. Give the names of the English Sovereigns who began their reigns at the following dates: 1199, 1327, 1483, 1603, 1727.

LATIN.

I. Translate into English:

Aduatuci, de quibus supra scripsimus, cum omnibus copiis auxilio Nerviis venirent, hac pugna nuntiata, ex itinere domum reverterunt: cunctisque oppidis castellisque desertis, sua omnia in unum oppidum egregie natura munitum contulerunt. Quod cum ex omnibus in circuitu partibus altissimas rupes despectusque haberet, una ex parte leniter acclivis aditus in latitudinem non amplius ducentorum pedum relinquebatur; quem locum duplici altissimo muro munierant, tum magni ponderis saxa et praeacutas trabes in muro collocarant.

II. Grammatical Questions.

1. The Present, Perfect, Supine, and Infinitive Present (Active) of venirent, desertis, contulerunt, relinquebatur, munierant.

2. Decline throughout itinere, partibus, pedum, ponderis, trabes : and give their gender.

3. The case and government of auxilio, oppidis, natura, pedum, ponderis.

4. What participles have Active, Passive, and Deponent Verbs, respectively? Give examples.

5. Give the English and decline the singular number of the pronouns quisquis, quidam, quisquam.
