Le roi de Suède se trouva ainsi sans provisions et sans communication avec la Pologne, entouré d'ennemis, au milieu d'un pays où il n'avait guère de ressource que son courage. Dans cette extrémité, le mémorable hiver de 1709, plus terrible encore sur ces frontières de l'Europe que nous ne l'avons senti en France, détruisit une partie de son armée. Charles voulait braver les saisons, comme il faisait ses ennemis; il osait faire de longues marches de troupes pendant ce froid mortel. Ce fut dans une de ces marches que deux mille hommes tombèrent morts de froid presqu'à ses yeux. Les cavaliers n'avaient plus de bottes; les fantassins étaient sans souliers et presque sans habits. Ils étaient réduits à se faire des chaussures de peaux de bêtes comme ils pouvaient : souvent ils manquaient de pain. On avait été réduit à jeter tous les canons dans des marais et dans des rivières, faute de chevaux pour les traîner. II. Grammatical Questions.

1. Give the present, future, perfect, and aorist of ἔρχεται, ἐπάρατε, λαμβάνει, συνάγει, σπείρων, ἔστη, βάλετε, εὑρήσετε, διεζώσατο.

2. Decline, in the singular number, χώρας, ἄλλος, πολλοὶ, γυναικὸς, μαθηταὶ, πλήθους, θάλασσα, ἑαυτὸν.

3. Write out the whole tense of θεάσασθε, κεκοπιάκατε, ᾔδεισαν, ἀπεκρίθησαν, ἠγάπα, διεζώσατο. Say what tenses they are, and what verbs they come from.

4. What are the augments ? When are they severally used, and in what tenses ? Give examples.

5. What are the characteristics of the conjugations of verbs in ω, and of verbs in μ? Give examples, as far as you can, from the passages before you.

6. Give the derivation of τετράμηνος, προσφάγιον, ἐπενδύτην.
