GEOGRAPHY.

[N.B.-Only six of the following Questions are required to be answered. Any six may be selected by the Candidate.]

1. Name all the counties of England that are washed by the Irish Sea and by the Bristol Channel. Give the chief town of each county, the river on which it stands, and the trade or manufacture for which each is noted.

2. Name in regular order the principal trading ports on the east of Scotland, and on the south of Ireland; state the position of each, and describe, as fully as possible, any three of these ports.

3. Describe the course of the Thames, of the Rhine, and of the Vistula, mentioning the chief towns on their banks, and the chief tributaries they receive.

4. With respect to the places named below, give the following particulars:-(i.) The county to which each town belongs. (ii.) The river, bay, &c., on which each is situated. (iii.) The trade, manufacture, &c., for which each is noted. (iv.) The meaning of each name: Exeter, Portsmouth, Bath, Lewes, Winchester, Ipswich, Dorchester, Dublin, Stafford, Aberdeen.

5. Describe the climate of Scotland and that of Ireland. Why are the winters in Scotland mild? and to what causes can we attribute the humidity of the climate of Ireland?

6. What are the productions and chief exports of France and of Denmark? Describe geographically the position of Lyons, Strasbourg, Rouen, Bordeaux, Altona, Copenhagen; and state for what these places are noted.

7. Describe Turkey or Italy in the following order :-(i.)_Boundaries. (ii.) Surface. (iii.) Rivers. (iv.) Chief towns. (v.) Manufactures, trade, &c. (vi.) Exports. (vii.) Government.

8. Mention the chief mountain ranges of Europe, stating the countries through which they pass, their principal peaks, direction, and most striking physical features.

9. Of the countries of Europe that lie wholly or in part between 50° and 60° of N. Latitude, state:-(i.) The name of each country. (i.) The capital or chief town. (iii.) The principal sea-ports. (iv.) The most important articles of export.

10. Give the meaning and the etymology of each of the following names of places, &c.:-(i.) Petersburg. (i.) Altona. (iii.) Cologne. (iv.) Zuyder Zee. (v.) Zealand. (vi.) Amsterdam. (vii.) Frankfort. (viii.) Coblentz. (ix.) Piedmont. (x.) Naples. (xi.) Gibraltar.

ARITHMETIC.

1. Find the value of 1259 farthings, 539 pence, and 657 fourpenny pieces.

2. Reduce 127 scruples to Troy weight.

3. A manufacturer, who employs a certain number of men af 30s. a week, and 45 boys at 5s. 3d. a week, pays £199. 6s. 3d. in weekly wages; how many men does he employ?

4. Reduce 13 miles 5 furlongs 16 yards to feet.

A carriage 71 wheel, the circumference of which is 12 feet, is observed to make 66 revolutions in one minute; find the rate per hour at which the 9 mil carriage is moving.

5. Add together 13, 15, 6, 13. A line, an inch in length, is 2700 divided into 19 equal parts, and also into 20; what fraction of an

inch is the distance between the fifth of the former and the fifth in of the latter divisions?

6. Reduce to a simple fraction 18 of 13 of 7.

7. The weights of equal volumes of aluminium and of silver are as

2 to 10, and the values of equal weights as 31 to 6; compare the values of equal volumes.

8. Add together 465, 317, and 54; and multiply the sum by 1.2 100.

9. Multiply 15-48 by 125, and divide 27.569 by 00275. 193500 10025 10. Reduce 0031 and 59 to vulgar fractions; multiply the fractions together, and reduce the product to a decimal. Hence prove the rule for pointing in multiplication of decimals.

6. On what conditions did the Scotch deliver up Charles I. to the English Parliament ?

7. Relate the story of the Popish Plot.

8. Give the name of the English General who commanded the garrison during the siege of Gibraltar in 1782. To what nations did the attacking fleet belong?
