I. Translate into English :

Ea re permissa, diem concilio constituerunt, et jurejurando, ne quis enuntiaret, nisi quibus communi consilio mandatum esset, inter se sanxerunt. Eo concilio dimisso, iidem principes civitatum, qui ante fuerant, ad Caesarem reverterunt, petieruntque, uti sibi secreto in occulto de sua omniumque salute cum eo agere liceret. Ea re impetrata, sese omnes flentes Caesari ad pedes projecerunt: non minus se id contendere et laborare, ne ea, quae dixissent, enuntiarentur, quam uti ea, quae vellent, impetrarent; propterea quod, si enuntiatum esset, summum in cruciatum se venturos viderent.

II. Grammatical Questions.

1. Enuntiaret, mandatum esset, dixissent, vellent. Why are these moods and tenses used?

2. Permissa, jurejurando, sanxerunt, principes, occulto, venturos. Parse these words. Give the principal parts of the verbs.

3. Caesari ad pedes. Mention any similar uses of the dative.

4. "Non minus se venturos viderent." Change this into "oratio recta."

6. Decline salute, re, pedes, cruciatum.

7. What is the precise force of pro in projecerunt? What other meanings has this preposition, when joined with verbs? Give examples. How does it differ in meaning from prae and ante?

1. Any two sides of a triangle are together greater than the third side.
