PRELIMINARY GENERAL EXAMINATION.- -Midsummer, 1868.

THURSDAY, June 18th.-Afternoon, 4 to 6.

NATURAL HISTORY.

I. BOTANY.

1. What is the function of the leaf in plants? Draw outlines, and give the names of the principal forms it assumes in plants. 2. What are the parts of a complete flower?

3. Describe and account for the difference of structure shown by cross sections of the stems of the oak, the sugar-cane, and the fern.

4. Distinguish between a spike and a raceme, an umbel and a corymb, a root and a tuber; and give examples of each.

5. Assign to their proper Class, Order, or Family, either in the Natural or in the Linnaean arrangement, the following plants :the beech, the fir, the alder, the daisy, the aloe, the lily, the turnip, the potato, the strawberry, the cranberry, and the truffle.

II. ZOOLOGY.

1. Make a table of the principal orders of the Class Pisces, with examples of each.

2. Describe the mechanism by which respiration is effected in fishes.

3. What is the normal number of segments in insects? By what organ do these animals breathe ?

4. Describe the various stages in the growth of a bird from the egg to its perfect form.

5. Arrange under their proper Order, Class, and Sub-kingdom, the following animals :-the horse, the bear, the giraffe, the kangaroo, the lark, the plover, the haddock, the shrimp, the snail, the leech, the limpet, the spider, the sponge, and the amœba.
