ENGLISH HISTORY.

1. What peoples have successively made conquests in England, at what periods; and which of them have left the most lasting traces behind them?

2. Give a short account of any three of the following battles :Agincourt, Barnet, Malplaquet, Naseby, Bannockburn, Hastings; mentioning the reigns in which they occurred.

3. Give a short account of any two of the following persons:Anne Boleyn, Titus Oates, Hampden, Wickliffe, and Sir Walter Raleigh.

4. What circumstances brought the family of Stuart to the throne of England? Name the English Kings of that family, with the dates of their accession, the relationship which they bore to each other, and the manner in which each ended his reign.

5. Give a short account of the Magna Charta, the Petition of Right, and the Habeas Corpus Act.

6. Explain the origin of the word "Cabal."

7. Give a short account of three of the most celebrated men of science or literature in the 17th century.

Ita proelium restitutum est, atque omnes hostes terga verterunt neque prius fugere destiterunt, quam ad flumen Rhenum millia passuum ex eo loco circiter quinquaginta pervenerint. Ibi perpauci, aut viribus confisi transnatare contenderunt, aut lintribus inventis sibi salutem repererunt. In his fuit Ariovistus, qui naviculam deligatam ad ripam nactus ea profugit.

II. Grammatical Questions.

(1.) Go through the tenses :-mittit, denegasset, veniebat, destiterunt, pervenerint.

(2.) Decline the nouns,-adventu, periculo, loco, lintribus, spem, and state the gender of each.

(3.) Decline magnum, eum, omnis, his.

(4.) Parse fully, stating the government of each word: legatos, pertinacia, millia, ea, nactus, pervenerint.

(5.) Write the present, perfect, and supine of mittit, destiterunt, repererunt, facere, fieri, posse.

(6.) Explain the construction called the Ablative Absolute, and select any examples of it which occur in these extracts.

(7.) What kind of verb is licere? Explain how such verbs are used.

I. Translate into English :

Α. Ταῦτα ἐν παροιμίαις λελάληκα ὑμῖν· ἔρχεται ὥρα ὅτε οὐκέτι ἐν παροιμίαις λαλήσω ὑμῖν, ἀλλὰ παῤῥησίᾳ περὶ τοῦ πατρὸς ἀναγγελῶ ὑμῖν. Εν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐν τῷ ὀνόματί μου αἰτήσεσθε· καὶ οὐ λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι ἐγὼ ἐρωτήσω τὸν πατέρα περὶ ὑμῶν· αὐτὸς γὰρ ὁ πατὴρ φιλεῖ ὑμᾶς, ὅτι ὑμεῖς ἐμὲ πεφιλήκατε, καὶ πεπιστεύκατε ὅτι ἐγὼ παρὰ τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐξῆλθον. Ἐξῆλθον παρὰ τοῦ πατρὸς, καὶ ἐλήλυθα εἰς τὸν κόσμον· πάλιν ἀφίημι τὸν κόσμον· καὶ πορεύομαι πρὸς τὸν πατέρα. Λέγουσιν αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ· Ιδε, νῦν παῤῥησίᾳ λαλεῖς, καὶ παροιμίαν οὐδεμίαν λέγεις. Νῦν οἴδαμεν ὅτι οἶδας πάντα, καὶ οὐ χρείαν ἔχεις ἵνα τίς σε ἐρωτᾷ· ἐν τούτῳ πιστεύομεν ὅτι ἀπὸ Θεοῦ ἐξῆλθες.

Β. Απεκρίθη Ιησοῦς· Ἐὰν ἐγὼ δοξάζω ἐμαυτὸν, ἡ δόξα μου οὐδέν ἐστιν· ἔστιν ὁ πατήρ μου ὁ δοξάζων με, ὃν ὑμεῖς λέγετε ὅτι Θεὸς ὑμῶν ἐστί. Καὶ οὐκ ἐγνώκατε δ αὐτόν· ἐγὼ δὲ οἶδα αὐτόν· καὶ ἐὰν εἴπω ὅτι οὐκ οἶδα αὐτὸν, ἔσομαι ὅμοιος ὑμῶν ψεύστης. Αλλ ̓ οἶδα αὐτὸν, καὶ τὸν λόγον τηρῶ.

II. Grammatical Questions.

1. Decline παροιμία, ὑμεῖς, ὄνομα, πατὴρ, ἐκεῖνος, ψεύτης.

2. Write out the tenses, ἔρχεται, φιλεῖ, ἀναγγελώ, αφίημι, οἴδαμεν.

3. Give the future and perfect of the verbs πιστεύω, εἶμι, ἐρωτάω, ἔρχομαι.

4. Write down all the dative cases occurring in the first six lines stating briefly the reasons for their being in that case.
