ENGLISH HISTORY.

1. Give a list of the Tudor Sovereigns, with dates. Specify in what way they were related to one another.

2. In what reigns has England been engaged in hostilities with Scotland? Mention the principal circumstances which led to those hostilities, and the most important battles fought.

3. Give an account of any two of the following personages:Simon de Montfort, Sir Thomas More, Lambert Simnel, the Earl' of Essex, Admiral Blake.

4. Mention the principal events in the reign of King John.

5. What was the dispute which led to the wars of the Roses?

6. Mention the chief battles fought in the course of the civil war in the reign of Charles I.

7. Which of our Kings ascended the Throne with a defective title? Which Kings came to a violent end?

I. Translate into English:

Dum haec in colloquio geruntur, Caesari nuntiatum est, equites Ariovisti propius tumulum accedere, et ad nostros adequitare, lapides telaque in nostros conjicere. Caesar loquendi finem fecit, seque ad suos recepit, suisque imperavit, ne quod omnino telum in hostes rejicerent : nam etsi sine ullo periculo legionis delectae cum equitatu proelium fore videbat; tamen committendum non putabat, ut, pulsis hostibus, dici posset, eos a se per fidem in colloquio circumventos. Posteaquam in vulgus militum elatum est, qua arrogantia in colloquio Ariovistus usus, omni Gallia Romanis interdixisset; impetumque in nostros ejus equites fecissent, eaque res colloquium ut diremisset; multo major alacritas, studiumque pugnandi majus exercitui injectum est.

II. Grammatical Questions.

1. Decline haec, ullo, nostros, ejus, major, quod, eos, omni.

2. Decline the following nouns, stating their gender and declension :Caesari, tumulum, vulgus, fidem, exercitui, telum, legionis.

3. Give the perfect tense and supine of the following verbs :-accedere, fecit, videbat, diremisset, pugnandi, posset.

4. Parse fully, stating how they are governed:-equites, tumulum, proelium, Gallia, arrogantia.

5. Explain the use of the gerund: write down those gerunds that occur in the extract, parsing them fully.

6. Parse elatum est. What is the real nominative to it? Define impersonal verbs, and give instances.

7. Conjicere, rejicerent, injectum est, have the same simple verb in common. State what that verbis, and explain concisely the force that the preposition gives to each of these compounds.

8. From what verb does pulsis come? Parse fore.

Give its principal parts.

9. What part of speech is ne? What single word is used for et ne? For et non?

10. What part of the verb is committendum? Explain and parse it. 11. What verbs have no passive? Define a deponent verb, and give

MECHANICS.

1. Two weights, of 3 lbs. and 4 lbs. respectively, balance at the ends of a straight lever 10 inches long. Find the distance of the fulcrum from either end.

2. A person sitting in one scale of a weighing-machine presses with a stick against a point in the beam between the end and the fulcrum: show that he will appear to weigh more than before.

3. Describe the screw. If a power of 50 lbs, is exerted at the end of an arm of 3 ft., and the distance between two threads of a screw is inch, find the pressure produced, assuming the circumference of a circle to be 314 times its diameter.

4. Find the centre of gravity of a plane triangle.

5. What is meant by "mechanical advantage"? Show, by reference to any of the mechanical powers, that "what is gained in power is lost in velocity."

6. How is the accelerating effect of a force measured? What is the measure of the acceleration of gravity?

7. What effect is produced upon the time of oscillation of a pendulum by lengthening or shortening it? Explain how a person, by alternately standing upright and crouching down in a swing, can increase his speed.

8. When a stone, whirled round in a sling, is released, in what direction does it fly off? Give other illustrations of the effect of centrifugal force.

9. Upon what causes does the variation in the force of gravity at different places on the earth's surface depend?
