I. Translate into English :

̓Αμὴν, ἀμὴν λέγω σοι, ὅτε ἧς νεώτερος, ἐζώννυες σεαυτὸν, καὶ περιεπάτεις ὅπου ἤθελες· δτὰν δὲ γηράσῃς, ἐκτενεῖς τὰς χεῖράς σου, καὶ ἄλλος σε ζώσει, καὶ οἴσει ὅπου οὐ θέλεις. τοῦτο δὲ εἶπε, σημαίνων ποίῳ θανάτῳ δοξάσει τὸν Θεὸν. καὶ τοῦτο εἰπὼν, λέγει αὐτῷ· Ακολούθει μοι. Επιστραφεὶς δὲ ὁ Πέτρος βλέπει τὸν μαθητὴν, ὃν ἠγάπα ὁ Ἰησοῦς, ἀκολουθοῦντα, (ὃς καὶ ἀνέπεσεν ἐν τῷ δείπνῳ ἐπὶ τὸ στήθος αὐτοῦ, καὶ εἶπε· Κύριε, τίς ἐστιν ὁ παραδιδούς σε;) τοῦτον ἰδὼν ὁ Πέτρος, λέγει τῷ Ἰησοῦ, Κύριε, οὗτος δὲ τί; λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς, Ἐὰν αὐτὸν θέλω μένειν ἕως ἔρχομαι, τί πρός σε; σὺ ἀκολούθει μοι. Ἐξῆλθεν οὖν ὁ λόγος οὗτος εἰς τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς, ὅτι ὁ μαθητὴς ἐκεῖνος οὐκ ἀποθνήσκει. Καὶ οὐκ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς, ὅτι οὐκ ἀποθνήσκει· ἀλλ ̓ ἐὰν αὐτὸν θέλω μένειν ἕως ἔρχομαι, τί πρός σε ; οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ μαθητὴς ὁ μαρτυρῶν περὶ τούτων, καὶ γράψας ταῦτα· καὶ οἴδαμεν ὅτι ἀληθής ἐστιν ἡ μαρτυρία αὐτοῦ. Ἔστι δὲ καὶ ἄλλα πολλὰ ὅσα ἐποίησεν ὁ Ιησοῦς, ἅτινα ἐὰν γράφηται καθ' ἓν, οὐδὲ αὐτὸν οἶμαι τὸν κόσμον χωρῆσαι τὰ γραφόμενα βιβλία.

II. Grammatical Questions.

1. Write down the participles that occur in this extract, and explain them.

2. Decline σεαυτὸν, χεῖρας, δείπνῳ, τούτων, ἓν, ἀληθὴς, μαθητὴς, πόλλα, ἐπιστραφείς, μαρτυρῶν, παραδιδούς.

3. Give the future, perfect, and aorist of ἔρχομαι, ἐκτενεῖς, ἀνέπεσεν, ἀποθνήσκει, μένειν, σημαίνων, γηράσῃς.

4. οὗτος δὲ τί ; Supply the verb.

5. ἔστι δὲ καὶ ἄλλα πόλλα. Explain why the verb is singular here. What is the Greek usage on this point?

6. What is peculiar about the augment of ἤθελον ?

7. Give the derivation of ἀνέπεσεν, and show how its meaning in the above passage is accounted for.

8. Write out in full the tense to which οἴδαμεν belongs.

I.

Translate into English:

(a.) Heinrich Matthias, Graf von Thurn, kein geborner Böhme, aber Vesißer einiger Güter in diesem Königreiche, hatte sich durch Eifer für die protestantische Religion, und durch eine schwärmerische Anhänglichkeit an sein neues Vaterland, des ganzen Vertrauens der Utraquisten bemächtigt, welches ihm den Weg zu den wichtigsten Posten bahnte.

(b.) Seinen Degen hatte er gegen die Türken mit vielem Ruhme geführt; durch ein einschmeichelndes Betragen gewann er sich die Herzen der Menge.

(c) Ein heißer, ungestümer Kopf, der die Verwirrung liebte, weil seine Talente varin glänzten, unbesonnen und tolldreift genug, Dinge zu unternehmen, die eine kalte Klugheit und ein ruhigeres Blut nicht wagen; ungewissenhaft genug, wenn es die Befriedigung seiner Leidenschaften galt, mit dem Schicksale von Tausenden zu spielen, und eben fein genug, eine Nation, wie damals die böhmische war, an seinem Gängelbande zu führen.

(d.) Der Hof hatte ihm, als Burggrafen von Karlstein, die böhmische Krone und die Freiheitsbriefe des Königreichs zur Verwahrung anvertraut; aber etwas weit Wichtigeres— sich selbst-hatte ihm die Nation mit der Stelle eines Defensors oder Glaubensbeschüßers übergeben. Die Aristokraten, welche den Kaiser beherrschten, entrissen ihm unklug die Aufsicht über das Todte, um ihm den Einfluß auf das Lebendige zu lassen.

(e.) Sie nahmen ihm die Burggrafenstelle, die ihn von der Hofgunst abhängig machte, und kränkten seine Eitelkeit, die doch seinen Ehrgeiz unschädlich machte. Von dieser Zeit an beherrschte ihn die Begierde, und die Gelegenheit fehlte nicht lange, sie zu befriedigen.— (Schiller's, Geschichte des dreißigjährigen Krieges.")

Grammatical Questions on the above passages :

1. State the gender, number, and case of the following substantives in paragraph (a): :- -Güter, Königreiche, Eifer, Religion, Vaterland, Vertrauens, Weg; and in paragraph (d) of- Burggrafen, Freiheitsbriefe, Verwahrung, Kaiser, Einfluß, Aufsicht. Give the genitive singular and the nominative plural of the substantives just mentioned.

2. State the person, number, tense, and mood of the following verbs in paragraphs (b), (c), and (e):—gewann, glänzten, galt, nahmen. Give the past participle of each of these verbs.

3. State what cases are governed by the prepositions-durch, an, zu, in paragraph (a); and by-- mit, über, and auf in paragraph (d).

4. Explain the construction of paragraph (b) with respect to the subject and the verb. State also why machte in paragraph (e) is placed at the end of the

1. From a given point to draw a straight line equal to a given straight line.

2. Straight lines which join the extremities of two equal and parallel straight lines towards the same parts are themselves equal and parallel.

3. Every parallelogram having one angle a right angle has all its angles right angles.

4. (a+b)2 = a2+b2+2ab. Enunciate and prove the proposition of which this is the algebraical statement.

5. Describe a square equal to a given rectilineal figure.

6. Given the middle points of the sides of a triangle, construct the triangle.

1. Add together a− (2b+3c), 2a-(3b-c), -3a+ (b-c), and 2c-5b.

2. Find the continued product of a2 −a+1, a2+a+1, a−1, and a +1.

3. If a3-pa2+qa-r = 0, prove that x3-px2+qx-r is di visible by x-a.
