ENGLISH HISTORY.

1. Name the kingdoms of the Heptarchy, and describe their extent. What parts of Great Britain were not included in them? At what date and by whom were they united? Who first assumed the title of " King of the English," and what was the date of his accession ?

2. Give a genealogical table of the Norman dynasty, and mention (with dates) the leading events from the Conquest to V the accession of Henry II.

3. Explain clearly the respective claims of the houses of Lancaster and York to the throne, and give a chronological summary of the wars of the Roses.

4. Relate the story of the "Invincible Armada," and of Elizabeth's connection with the affairs of the Netherlands.

5. By what right did James VI. of Scotland become King of England? Write a brief history of his reign. Name the steps by which Queen Victoria is descended from him.

6. Give a full account of the Revolution of 1688, and describe the dynastic and constitutional settlements which resulted from it.

7. Write a brief life of any one (and no more) of the following persons-Wolsey, Monmouth, Marlborough, Chatham; and name the dates at which, and the sovereigns under whom, the following men of letters flourished:-Chaucer, Caxton, Milton, Addison, Gibbon.

I. Translate into English:

Dum paucos dies ad Vesontionem rei frumentariae commeatusque causa moratur, ex percunctatione nostrorum vocibusque Gallorum ac mercatorum, qui ingenti magnitudine corporum Germanos, incredibili virtute atque exercitatione in armis esse praedicabant, saepenumero sese cum eis congressos ne vultum quidem atque aciem oculorum ferre potuisse, tantus subito timor omnem exercitum occupavit, ut non mediocriter omnium mentes animosque perturbaret. Hic primum ortus est a tribunis militum, praefectis, reliquisque qui ex urbe amicitiae causa Caesarem secuti, magnum periculum miserabantur quod non magnum in re militari usum habebant, quorum alius alia causa illata, quam sibi ad proficiscendum necessariam esse diceret, petebat, ut ejus voluntate discedere liceret : nonnulli, pudore adducti, ut timoris suspicionem vitarent, remanebant. Hi neque vultum fingere, neque interdum lacrimas tenere poterant abditi in tabernaculis aut suum fatum querebantur, aut cum familiaribus suis commune periculum miserabantur. Vulgo totis castris testamenta obsignabantur.

II. Grammatical Questions.

:

1. Decline paucos, oculorum, alia, militum, sibi, vultum, aciem, castris.

2. Give the perfect indicative, supine, and present infinitive of moratur, occupavit, habebant, miserabantur, congressos, secuti.

3. Parse fully dies, virtute, ortus est, sibi, abditi, obsignabantur, illata.

4. Write down the second person singular of the imperative mood of moratur, ferre, diceret, illata, adducti, querebantur.

5. Define transitive and intransitive verbs.

6. State the rule for the ablative case signifying quality, and take examples from this extract.

2. If two angles of a triangle be equal to each other, the sides which are opposite to the equal angles are equal to each other.

3. Draw a straight line at right angles to a given straight line from a given point in the same: and thence show that two straight lines cannot have a common segment.

4. If the side of a triangle be produced, the exterior angle is equal to the two interior and opposite angles: and the three interior angles of every triangle are together equal to two right angles.

5. Describe a square on a given straight line.

6. Define a gnomon" and " a rectangle."

7. The parallelograms about the diameter of a square are squares.

8. Divide a given straight line into two such parts, that the rectangle contained by the whole and one of the parts shall be equal to the square of the other part.

9. If the middle points of the sides of a given equilateral triangle be joined, the triangle formed by the joining lines is an equilateral triangle whose area is one quarter of the area of the given triangle.

10. A straight line is drawn to meet another straight line : prove that the lines which bisect the two angles so made are perpendicular to each other.
