CHEMISTRY.

1. Describe the method of producing oxygen gas, and state the distinguishing characters and properties of this gas.

2. Explain the decomposition which occurs when iodide of potassium and corrosive sublimate are mixed together in solution.

3. Explain the reaction which occurs when zinc is dissolved in diluted sulphuric acid.

4. What is the result of heating a mixture of chalk and salammoniac?

5. What is the composition of acetic acid, and how is this acid obtained?

6. What are the characteristic tests by which lead, bismuth, and oxalic acid may be detected?

MECHANICS.

1. What portion of the science of Mechanics is included in Statics ? What is that branch called which treats of the laws of the motion of bodies?

2. Explain what is understood by a parallelogram of forces. Define a couple. What do you understand by friction in Statics?

3. What is the centre of gravity of any body; and what will be the form of a triangle, if its centre of gravity coincide with the centre of the circle circumscribing it?

4. A rod 12 feet long, and weighing 24 lbs., rests on two props, whose distances from the two ends are respectively two and four feet. Find the pressure on each prop.

5. Find the centre of gravity of an isosceles triangle, each of its equal sides being 15 inches, and its base 4 inches.

6. In the second system of pulleys, if the number of pulleys be 7, what weight will a power of 3 lbs. support?

7. Write out the third law of motion. accelerated motion? Illustrate it by an example.

8. Explain what is intended in the formula s=1 gt2+v with regard to falling bodies. In the event of the body being pro-, jected vertically upwards, what alteration will the formula undergo ?

9. A body in falling has described one-third of the altitude in the last second; determine the altitude from which it fell.

10. What must be the length of a simple pendulum in the latitude of London in order that it may vibrate seconds?
