ENGLISH GRAMMAR AND COMPOSITION.

1. Parse the following sentence :-
:-

"Where the bright seraphim in burning row,
Their loud uplifted angel-trumpets blow."

2. Analyse the following passage :—

"Where the remote Bermudas ride
In the ocean's bosom unespied,
From a small boat that row'd along

The listening winds received this song."

3. Define Orthography; and state what changes e mute and y undergo in declension and conjugation and in the formation of derivatives.

4. How many genders are here in English? What special modes have we of marking the ‹ ?

5. Define a case. How many are there in English? Distinguish between boys, boy's, and boys'.

6. To what parts of speech are the following words severally referable:few, each, betimes, the, whither, twice, a, ten, hers.

7. Define the terms-transitive, intransitive, mood, tense, participle.

8. Give three specimens of defective verbs and decline their present and imperfect tenses in full.

9. Define a preposition and a conjunction. Into what two classes can the latter be divided? Enumerate some of each class.

10. Write a short essay on one of the three following subjects: (i.) The attractions and drawbacks of the medical profession. (ii) Wild Flowers. (iii.) Shakespeare.

GEOGRAPHY.

[N.B.-Only six of the following Questions are required to be answered. Any six may be selected by the Candidate.]

1. Describe the mountain system of England, and mention the situation and height of its principal elevations. Illustrate your answer by a Map.

2. Describe the boundaries, physical features, and productions of Switzerland, Russia, Holland, and Prussia.

3. Assign to each of the following names its proper geographical description and locality:-Aden, Montreal, Cairo, Paisley, Sydney, New Orleans, Dantzic, Lewes, Odessa, Trieste, Birmingham, Falmouth.

4. Name the principal mountain ranges in Italy, Austria, Spain, France, Scotland, and Ireland; and describe generally the direction of the several ranges.

5. What are the productions and chief exports of the following countries ?-(i.) Greece; (ii.) Norway and Sweden; (iii.) Belgium. Describe geographically the position of Athens, Antwerp, Brussels, Stockholm; and state for what these places are noted.

6. Describe the course of a vessel from Marseilles to Hamburg. Through what seas, straits, &c., would she sail, and what headlands and river mouths would she pass? On a rough outline map, sketch the coast line, and the probable course of the vessel.

7. Name, in geographical succession, all the countries washed. by the Mediterranean sea and its branches; and specify the principal seaports of each country, and its most important articles of export.

8. With respect to each of the following rivers, viz., the Rhone, the Rhine, the Trent, the Volga, the Shannon, state-(i.) Where it rises; (ii.) The counties or countries through which it flows; (iii.) The sea, &c., into which it falls; (iv.) The most important towns on its banks, with the trade manufacture, &c., of each.

9. From what countries do we obtain the following articles :indigo, drugs, cochineal, cotton, coffee, sulphur, aloes, cinnamon, camphor, ginger?

10. Name our Colonial possessions in the Eastern hemisphere, and of any one of them give the following particulars:(i.) Boundaries; (ii.) Physical features; (iii.) Principal towns; (iv.) Productions and exports.

ARITHMETIC.

1. Multiply £10. 8s. 83d. by 680, and divide the result by 43. 2. If 1s. 3d. be the value of a superficial foot of land in the City of London, how much is an acre worth?

3. Find the Least Common Multiple of 28, 45, 54, and 63; and reduce 10393 to its lowest terms.

5. Divide £17. 2s. 9d. by 115; and find the difference between of a guinea and of 13s. 4d.

6. Of what sum of money is 31 guineas seven-thirteenths?

7. If a grain of gold make 70 square inches of gold leaf, find the weight of gold required to gild a cube whose side is 8 ft. 1 in.

8. Genuine sovereigns have 9167 parts of pure gold in 10,000. Some counterfeit sovereigns lately offered at the Bank have only 8138 parts. Find the value of one of these sovereigns.

9. Multiply 1.27 by 2.36. Divide 2.52 by 0012, and 108 by 14.4.

10. Express a mile in metres, a metre being equal to 39.371 inches.

11. There are four partners in a business. The senior partner has 7 shares, the second 5, the third 3, and the junior partner 1 share. If the profits are £1205, how much will each partner receive?
