I. Translate into English :(α) ο έχων την νύμφην, νυμφίος εστίν ο δέ φίλος του νυμφίου, και έστηκώς και ακούων αυτού, χαρά χαίρει διά την φωνήν του νυμφίου, αύτη ούν η χαρά ή έμή πεπλήρωται. Εκείνον δεί αυξάνειν, εμέ δε έλαττούσθαι. Ο άνωθεν ερχόμενος, επάνω πάντων εστίν. Ο ών εκ της γης, εκ της γης έστι, και εκ της γης λαλεί και εκ του ουρανού ερχόμενος επάνω πάντων εστί. Και ο εώρακε και ήκουσε, τούτο μαρτυρεί, και την μαρτυρίας αυτού ουδείς λαμβάνει. Ο λαβών αυτού την μαρτυρίαν, έσφράγισεν ότι ο Θεός αληθής εστιν. ον γάρ απέστειλεν ο Θεός, τα ρήματα του Θεού λαλεί, ου γαρ εκ μέτρου δίδωσιν ο Θεός το πνεύμα. Ο πατήρ αγαπά τον υιον, και πάντα δέδωκεν εν τη χειρί αυτού.

(8) Η ουν σπείρα και ο χιλίαρχος και οι υπηρέται των Ιουδαίων συνέλαβαν τον Ιησούν, και έδησαν αυτόν, και απήγαγον αυτόν προς 'Ανναν πρώτον: ήν γάρ πενθερος του Καιάφα, δς ήν αρχιερεύς του ενιαυτού εκείνου. "Ην δε Καιάφας και συμβουλεύσας τους Ιουδαίοις, ότι συμφέρει ένα άνθρωπον απολέσθαι υπέρ του Λαού. 'Ηκολούθει δε τώ Ιησού Σίμων Πέτρος, και ο άλλος μαθητής. Ο δε μαθητής εκείνος ήν γνωστός το αρχιερεί, και συνεισήλθε τω Ιησου εις την αυλήν του αρχιερέως. Ο δε Πέτρος ειστήκει προς τη θύρα έξω. Εξήλθεν ουν ο μαθητής και άλλος, δς ήν γνωστός τα αρχιερεί, και είπε τη θυρωρώ και εισήγαγε τον Πέτρον.

II. Grammatical Questions. 1. Write out the persons, singular and plural, of πεπλήρωται, εώρακε, ήκουσε, δίδωσιν, αγαπά, ήκολούθει ; and say what tense each is.

2. Decline χαρά, φωνήν, πατήρ, έστηκώς, ακούων.

3. Give the active present, future, perfect, and aorist of ακούων, λαλεί, εώρακε, απέστειλεν, απολέσθαι.

4. To what conjugations do the following verbs belong,--doppáγισεν, απέστειλεν, ήκουσε, απήγαγον; and what are the characteristics of those conjugations ?

5. The prepositions διά, εις, εκ, έν, πρός, υπέρ, occur in the above extracts. . What cases may they govern? How are prepositions distinguished from adverbs in Greek ?

6. What is the Reduplication in the Greek verb? What tenses use it ? and what verbs have none ?

3. Explain the reaction which occurs when zinc is dissolved in diluted sulphuric acid.

4. What is the result of heating a mixture of chalk and salammoniac ?

5. What is the composition of acetic acid, and how is this acid obtained ?

6. What are the characteristic tests by which lead, bismuth, and oxalic acid may be detected ?

MECHANICS.

1. What portion of the science of Mechanics is included in Statics? What is that branch called which treats of the laws of the motion of bodies ?

2. Explain what is understood by a parallelogram of forces. Define a couple. What do you understand by friction in Statics ?

3. What is the centre of gravity of any body; and what will be the form of a triangle, if its centre of gravity coincide with the centre of the circle circumscribing it?

4. A rod 12 feet long, and weighing 24 lbs., rests on two props, whose distances from the two ends are respectively two and four feet. Find the pressure on each prop.

5. Find the centre of gravity of an isosceles triangle, each of its equal sides being 15 inches, and its base 4 inches.

6. In the second system of pulleys, if the number of pulleys 384 be 7, what weight will a power of 3 lbs. support ?

7. Write out the third law of motion. What is uniform accelerated motion ? Illustrate it by an example.

8. Explain what is intended in the formula s= =} gt2 +0 with regard to falling bodies. In the event of the body being pro-, jected vertically upwards, what alteration will the formula undergo ? 9. A body in falling has described one-third of the altitude in

475.24 the last second ; determine the altitude from which it fell.

10. What must be the length of a simple pendulum in the latitude of London in order that it may vibrate seconds ?
