over the men of war, and he was accepted in the sight of all the people, and also in the sight of Saul's

servants.

6 And it came to pass, as they came when David was returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, that the women came out of all the cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet king Saul, with tabrets, with joy, and with instruments of music.

7 And the women answered one another as they played, and said, Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands. And Saul was very wroth, and the saying displeased him; and he said, They have ascribed unto David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed but thousands: and what can he have more but the kingdom?

9 And Saul eyed David that day and forward. And David went out against the Philistines, and smote them.

;

29 And Saul was yet the more afraid of David and Saul became David's enemy continually. And Saul spake unto Jonathan his son, and to all his servants, that they should kill David.

And David fled from the face of Saul, and Saul pursued him from place to place; but the Lord would not deliver David into his hands. And when David escaped to the cave of Adullam, his brethren and many others resorted unto him, mighty men of valour, and he became their captain.

And when David might have killed Saul, he would not, but restrained his men, saying, The Lord forbid that I should do this thing unto my master, the Lord's anointed.

And Samuel died; and all the Israelites were gathered together, and lamented him, and buried him at Ramah, where his house was.

LESSON LXXXIX. 1 SAMUEL, CHAP. XXXI.

AND it came to pass, when Saul had reigned over Israel many years, that the Philistines fought against Israel. And the Philistines followed hard upon Saul, and upon his sons; and the Philistines slew Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Melchi-shua. Saul's sons.

3 And the battle went sore against Saul, and the archers hit him; and he was sore wounded of the archers.

4 Then said Saul unto his armour-bearer, Draw thy sword, and thrust me through therewith; lest these Philistimes come and thrust me through and abuse me. But his armour-bearer would not; for he was sore afraid therefore Saul took a sword, and fell upon it.

5 And when his armour-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he fell likewise upon his sword, and died with him. So Saul died and his three sons, and his armour-bearer, and all his men, that same day together.

7 And when the men of Israel that were on the other side of the valley, and they that were on the other side Jordan, saw that the men of Israel fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, they forsook the cities and fled; and the Philistines came and dwelt in them.

8 And it came to pass on the morrow, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, that they found Saul and his three sons fallen in Mount Gilboa.

9 And they cut off his head, and stripped off his armour, and sent into the land of the Philistines round about, to publish it in the house of their idols, and among the people. And they put his armour in the house of Ashtaroth; and they fastened his body to the wall of Beth-shan.

11 And when the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead heard of that which the Philistines had done to Saul, all the valiant men arose, and went all night, and took the body of Saul, and the bodies of his sons, from the wall of Beth-shan, and came to Jabesh, and burnt them there. And they took their bones, and buried them under a tree at Jabesh, and fasted seven days.

LESSON XC. 2 SAMUEL, CHAP. VI. VII.

AND after the death of Saul, David was made king of Judah; and Ish-bosheth, Saul's son, was made king of Israel: but when Ish-bosheth had reigned two years, he was slain by two of his servants, and David was made king of Israel also; so he reigned over all the house of Israel.

And David went with the priests and Levites, and all the house of Israel, to fetch up the ark of the Lord from Kirjath-jearim. And David danced before the Lord with all his might; and David was girded with a linen ephod.

17 And they brought in the ark of the Lord, and set it in his place, in the midst of the tabernacle that David had pitched for it: and David offered burntofferings and peace offerings before the Lord.

18 And as soon as David had made an end of offering burnt offerings and peace-offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord of hosts. And he dealt among all the people, even among the whole multitude of Israel, as well to the women as men, to every one a cake of bread, and a good piece of flesh, and a flagon of wine. So all the people departed every one to his house.

1 And it came to pass, when the king sat in his house, and the Lord had given him rest round about

from all his enemies; that the king said unto Nathan the prophet, See now, I dwell in an house of cedar, but the ark of God dwelleth within curtains.

3 And Nathan said to the king, Go, do all that is in thine heart: for the Lord is with thee.

4 And it came to pass that night, that the word of the Lord came unto Nathan, saying, Go and tell my servant David, saying, Thus saith the Lord, Shalt thou build me an house for me to dwell in ?

6 Whereas I have not dwelt in any house since the time that I brought up the children of Israel out of Egypt, even to this day, but have walked in a tent

and in a tabernacle.

7 In all the places wherein I have walked with all the children of Israel spake I a word with any of the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to feed my people Israel, saying, Why build ye not me an house` of cedar?

8 Now therefore so shalt thou say unto my servant David, Thus saith the Lord of hosts, I took thee from the sheep-cote, from following the sheep, to be ruler over my people, over Israel :

9 And I was with thee whithersoever thou wentest, and have cut off all thine enemies out of thy sight, and have made thee a great name, like unto the name of the great men that are in the earth.

10 Moreover I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own, and move no more; neither shall the children of wickedness afflict them any more as before time,

11 And as since the time that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel, and have caused thee to rest from all thine enemies. Also the Lord telleth thee, that he will make thee an house.

And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy son after thee, and I will establish his kingdom.

14 I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If

he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men : but my mercy shall not depart away from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before thee.

16 And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever. According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speak unto David.

And David feared the Lord, and served him with a faithful heart: and though many enemies fought against him, yet, as he put his whole trust in the Lord, he was strengthened to overcome them all. And through the power of the Lord, David subdued the Philistines, the Moabites, the Syrians, and many other nations; and he was a great and mighty king.

LESSON XCI. 2 SAMUEL, CHAP. XI. XII.

AND it came to pass that king David saw Bathsheba, the wife of Uriah the Hittite, one of his captains; and he desired to have her for his wife.

And David ordered Joab, the chief captain of his host, to set Uriah in the fore-front of the battle, when he went to fight with the Ammonites.

And Joab did as the king commanded, and Uriah was slain. Then David took Bath-sheba to be his wife.

And the Lord sent Nathan unto David: and he came unto him and said unto him, There were two men in one city; the one rich and the other poor.

2 The rich man had exceeding many flocks and herds but the poor man had nothing, save one little ewe lamb, which he had bought, and nourished up, and it grew up together with him, and with his chil
