Excerpt from A Brief for the Trial of Criminal Cases

In order that I mi ht not err t rough lack of actual experience in any special class of cases, I enlist at the outset the assistance of William C. Beecher. Esq.. Whose ex nce in prosecution, both as Assistant District Attorn in New York County, an thereafter as active counsel for the New York Society for e Suppression of Vice, and in defense in a long succession of causes since his term as Assistant District Attorney expired, has peculiarly qualified him to aid me in the most tactical and useful manner; also the assistance of Morris 000per, Esq. (author 0 a work on Referees), whose experience, both in defense and in authorship has enabled him, in carrying out my preparations in detail, to analyze in a ve intelii t manner a very large number of sel authorities. I am also indebte for va uable assistance, in extended research on various s ial sub acts, to Memrs. Sumner B. Stiles, J. Hope Caldwell, Charles J. Osborn, an Frederic H. Cooke.
