[The Rev. Thomas Twining entered Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, in 1755, and became a Fellow in 1760. His life was passed at Colchester he had sole charge of the parish of Fordham from 1764, the year of his marriage, and latterly held the living of St. Mary's in Colchester till his death in 1804. See "Recreations and Studies of a Country Clergyman of the Eighteenth Century" (Murray, 1882) for a very pleasant account of his learned friendships, his driving tours in England and Wales, and his great dread of a French invasion, as recorded in his own letters.]

[This accomplished scholar was born in 1730, and was a member of Queen's and Merton Colleges, Oxford; he was an under-secretary of the War Department, a clerk of the House of Commons, and a Curator of the British Museum. The latter years of his life were devoted to literature, English as well as that of the ancient classics. He died in 1786; his edition of the "Poetics" was a posthumous work.]
