The Senate met pursuant to adjournment.

In the absence of the President and President pro tempore of the Senate, the Senate was called to order by Senator Searcy, who had been designated by the presiding officer to perform that duty.

At 10:05 o'clock a. m., on motion of Mr. Searcy, the Senate adjourned until tomorrow, at 11:00 o'clock a. m.

The Senate met, pursuant to adjournment.

In the absence of the President and President pro tempore of the Senate, the Senate was called to order by Senator Kessinger, he having been designated to perform that duty.

A MESSAGE FROM THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.

By unanimous consent, the following message from the House of Representatives was taken up for consideration: And the question being, "Shall the Senate concur with the House of Representatives in the adoption of the resolution?" it was decided in the affirmative.

A messaage from the House by Mr. McCann, Clerk:

Mr. President-I am directed to inform the Senate that the House of Representatives has adopted the following joint resolution, in the adoption of which I am instructed to ask the concurrence of the Senate, to-wit:

HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION No. 9.

Resolved, by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring herein, That when the two Houses adjourn today they stand adjourned until Tuesday, January 23, 1923, at 10:00 o'clock a. m.

Adopted by the House, January 17, 1923.

Senate met pursuant to adjournment.

Hon. Fred E. Sterling, Lieutenant Governor and President of the Senate, presiding.

The President of the Senate announced that he had examined the Journals of Wednesday, January 10, 1923, Tuesday, January 16, 1923, and Wednesday, January 17, 1923, and found no corrections to make in any of the Journals and unless some Senator had corrections to offer the Journals would stand approved. No corrections being offered the Journals were ordered to stand approved.

At 10:05 o'clock a. m., on motion of Mr. Roos the Senate took a recess until 5:00 o'clock this p. m.

Senate reconvened.

5:00 O'CLOCK P. M.

Prayer by the Chaplain, Reverend T. DeWitt Tanner, of Joliet, Illinois, Rector of Christ Episcopal Church.

The President of the Senate announced that Honorable Lowell B. Mason, Senator-elect from the Twenty-third Senatorial District to the Fifty-third and Fifty-fourth General Assemblies was at the Bar of the Senate and desired to take the oath of office.

Thereupon Judge E. S. Smith, of the Circuit Court of Sangamon County, State of Illinois, administered the oath of office to him as required by the Constitution of the State, to which oath of office he subscribed his name.

Senate Bill No. 2, a bill for "An Act making an additional appropriation to the Department of Public Health."

Was taken up and read at large a first time, and ordered to a second reading.

Senate Bill No. 3, a bill for "An Act making additional appropriations to the Attorney General."

Was taken up and read at large a first time, and ordered to a second reading.

Senate Bill No. 5, a bill for "An Act making a re-appropriation from the State Bond Road Fund for the purpose of carrying out the provisions of 'An Act in relation to the construction by the State of Illinois of a State-wide system of durable hard-surfaced roads upon public highways of the State and the provision of means for the payment of the cost thereof by an issue of bonds of the State of Illinois,' approved June 22, 1917, in force July 1, 1917."

Was taken up and read at large a first time, and ordered to a second reading.

Senate Bill No. 6, a bill for "An Act making an appropriation from the Road Fund for the purpose of completing payments on contracts entered into prior to July 1, 1923, for the construction of roads, and for the purpose of constructing Federal aid roads and durable hardsurfaced roads upon the routes described in 'An Act in relation to the construction by the State of Illinois of a State-wide system of durable hard-surfaced roads upon public highways of the State, and the provision of means for the payment of the cost thereof, by an issue of bonds of the State of Illinois,' approved June 22, 1917, in force July 1, 1917, and for the carrying out of powers incidental to road construction and improvement."

Mr. Roos introduced a bill of the following title: Senate Bill No. 17, a bill for "An Act to amend section 36, of 'An Act concerning fees and salaries, and to classify the several counties of this State with. reference thereto,' approved March 29, 1872, as amended, is amended to read as follows:"

Mr. Dailey introduced a bill of the following title: Senate Bill No. 18, a bill for "An Act making an appropriation to the Department of Registration and Education to pay the expense of enforcing the provisions of 'An Act in relation to the definition, registration and regulation of real estate brokers and real estate salesmen,' approved June 29, 1921.”

Which was referred to the Committee on Appropriations.

COMMUNICATIONS.

The President presented the following communication:

To the Honorable Members of the General Assembly of Illinois:

On January 24, 1923, at 10:30 a. m., at its headquarters, 516 South Sixth Street, the Service Recognition Board will draw the first ten applications for the bonus authorized by an Act passed at the last session of your honorable body.
